Hi there,

Call me stoopid... this is my first foray into pigtails.

How do I wire my UREE 1178 for dual mono operation ??
(bit confused as pin 2 doesn't seem to be hot according to diagram in manual)

If someone could please explain how to wire it (in simple English) I would be
extremely appreciative...what goes where etc.

At the moment the pigtails are cut off it looks like the photo....
confusing ! (to me)

Want to use it in a session tomorrow.

Hey Nymo, are you sending it a balanced or unbalanced signal?
Assuming it's balanced, hot goes to the one with the plus and minus, cold to com and shield to grd.
Ubalanced you put hot to the +/- and shield to com on both sides then link both coms to grd.

Sorry, that wasn' too clear. The +/- goes to pin 2, com goes to pin 3, grd goes to pin 1. On an xlr. It's a lot easier if you put those spade connectors on the end that you screw to the barrier strip. Electrical places have them.

Thanx guys...it was a case of me or my tech NOT RTFM !!

He looked at another page and (now I know) it has been wired for unbalanced so that threw us completely.

of course when you send it down for re-capping and alignment i'd add some nice correctly wired XLR tails for you :)

Rob, why do folks put XLR tails on when you could hardwire some XLR's to the chassis?? Is is to keep the look 'original' so that its 'unmodified'?

a good question Tim!

some units despite the apparent vacant space on the outside of the rear panel, don't have the realestate behind the rear panel, inside the unit, to give the required space for the XLR body.

Otherwise it can come down to cost and levels of enthusiasm. To accurately machine up the required holes takes time and considerations of boring through a steel panel with electronics lurking on the far side ain't insignificant.

I'd happily panel mount XLRs but ballpark cost would be something like $22 for a set of XLR tails ( terminated in eyelets so they can't slip out of the screw terminals ) against say $45 to machine in panel mount XLRs.
