Real baits or SP's? Always been a real bait man myself, those SP's smell funny. I swear I lost a mpther of a Jewie a few weeks back in the Hastings river while Bream fishing, 6kg line was not gonna stop it with a runout tide landbased. Grrrr.

Now how much is that GML or Sontec eq I can't afford, mmmm eq or driveway, farout!

Nice one there where was that? Though yeah I reckon 6kg line would turn it around, it felt bigger, what ever I hooked up with just ran and ran, a few vicious head shakes and it was gone. Thought it was a croc sized flattie but it took off too fast.

Yeah for sure, hmmmm I'll be better prepared next time I hit the Hastings in a few weeks, I'll put a couple of live Tailor out and see what happens.

that little fella is thick for his size , the soapies we see this year are much thinner therefore obviously desperate to eat my bait - well done i cant seem to manage daylight fish myself
(maybe if i went out in the daylight my chances would improve)

Yeah this one was still one of the "smaller ones" 14 kg..got it off the Stockton Breakwall in Newcastle. My PB is 21 kg, although I don't fish for them anymore since I moved to Melbourne..The one pictured was on my last weekend trip up there in Jan this year. Rick, as you can probably see, that was just in dusk not realy daylight..But I got all my jewies in daylight,...so go figure..and you're right that one was fat..usually this length fish is around 12 kg.

They...(not me) have been catching a few mulloway under Westgate Bridge over the past few weeks. The mouth of the Patterson River is another spot usually after a good rain and the water is discoulered flowing out into the bay.

My boat has found a home moored in mordialloc creek and the gummy shark is a regular on the bite just on sunset.

Wow a simple little fishing comment has spawned all this!

I thought I recognised Nobbys in the background of that beautiful fish. I've walked the breakwall on the other side for years now-don't seem to be getting any skinnier, and always wondered if anyone caught anything big out there. Now i know. Long way to come to throw a line in though!

yeah, It's a beautiful part of the world...I realy miss it. Yeah very long way, but it was worth it hey :)).. I have a great squad up there so it's always fun going back

let me see if i understand you are fishing the runout of the newcastle river , the one that winds out past 100 years of bhp dioxins , sulpher and lead and has the highst toxic metal per sample count in australia and heavy metals are only the start of the stuff that will be in that stream for the next 250 years AND you quite happily eat the lovely bounty you catch, you havent died or gotten sick from newy jewies(and you wouldnt either but i digress) and you NOT fishing in melbourne because of the pollution ..?

its time to rethink your excuses , grab a beany and a head torch and go and have a look at what the boys do at night around westgate me thinks
or come up with a better more believable excuse ..like melbourne is too cold to fish , my girl is too warm to leave ... etc etc :)

Hunter river would be poluted around the BHP area at, so called, Dockyard, I agree.Not sure how familiar you're with the area, but the spot where we fish is at Stockton breakwall, the tip of it, which is open ocean and a few Ks from the Dockyard.The Mulloway (especially adult fish) are believed to live around certain spots and not move too much around, hence my understanding that the fish you catch in the ocean is somewhat diferent to what you'd get a couple of Ks upstream the river in a major industrial area.
I'm not sure where you get the info from that w/gate bridge area produces good mulloway, because the reports of them caught are very rare, at least what I have heard, or maybe it's just lack of my involvement in the hobby lately, but I'm pretty sure it's sparce. Even amounts that they do catch are nowhere near what people get at above mentioned spot. a report I got from a guy I used to fish with, from Feb this year says that 38 Jewies were caught at the b/wall in 1 night.
The whole thing about eating fish out of poluted water is only significant if you eat it a couple of times a week or so anyway, but should be OK every now and then..however, I'll pass on yarra and Marybirnong river Jewies and Bream...However an odd pinky, people say, should be pretty healthy from those areas as it lives in the bay and just passes through on occasions.
Try the Stockton b/wall or the Beach..Your catch from there will be pretty safe to eat :)),... and even under the Westgate, but please not too often.

i am pretty famiar with newy jewies :)

within reason all mulloway are safe to eat as they are avery fast growing fish (to 1 meter in 3 years !)
as opposed to say a bream (45 cm in 30 years!) , so whatever heavy metal they accumulate is way less then slow growing mud monsters most people catch and eat about the place

however i have seen dioxin reports stating the the dioxin levels at the mouth of the hunter to be 35 times higher then the mouth of sydney harbour !

the muck is now in the water all all our major cities waterways forever . cannot be fixed just flushed over decades/ centuries no really worrys for me as right across the country the levels are way lower now then they were in the 1950s !
so thats a lot of people that have been eating the fish for a long time with out a worry or problem
its no new event if you get my point !

i have "heard" reports of 60 fish a night by melbourne docklands so they are there for sure
my little brother is mad for it as well he has been a melbournite for 20 years

i let the little fishy buggers go 10 kilos and under, not that there has been much letting go lately :(

we have found a hideous tackle thief inside a wreck in sydney harbour
currently it is hideous tackle thief 4.... rick none .
we think its either a very clever version the 36 kg model i am looking for or a massive black cod (they grow to 100kg+) , either way , i havent got him out of the wreck on 4 tries with 60kg line and 100 kilo trace!
it takes all night to tempt him ten secs for him to do his thing !
its kinda funny to watch !
