I went to see the premier at the enmore theatre on Wed. It was pretty good actually, although I thought Keating was better in it's originality and execution. I guess it helps that I was a Keating fan and couldn't stand Howard, which the show made particular point of.

And normally I couldn't care less for live sound but I thought the sound mix last wed overall was pretty poor. The cymbals were extremely loud and harsh, overall it was a little too loud and too much of the (clever) dialogue was lost because you couldn't understand what they were saying. Then today in the SMH I read this

The best of Perfect's songs pack a solid punch (Never Cross The Line savages Aussie notions of good sportsmanship) but his reliance on power-ballad pastiche is deadening and the musical arrangements don't leave enough space for his growling voice to cut through. Too many laugh lines are lost in the mix.

Now I'm not sure if the journalist (Jason Blake) was a sound guy or not but how did this get missed by everybody involved? What exactly is the sound guy listening for when doing his mix?

Anyone else gone and seen it? And am I being overly critical?

they are probably listening for how much beer their fellow engineers are grabbing for em :)

my good friend and turtlerock assoc steve francis actually did the sound design for this thing ( as opposed to the music or the sound mix)
e is so busy do theatre stuff he didnt even get to make to the opening night !
so who knows whats going on?
i'll see if there is any scuttlebutt

I've been to a few gigs at the Enmore that have been very top heavy. Maybe it sounds ok at the desk?

not so gold if you actually mean they mix this for people recording it into their phones, if so...that is a travesty beyond belief.

Hey Linear, Steve Francis who was the sound designer for this show and couldn't attend the show you were at has asked if you could let us know which row and seat number you were sitting in and if it was upstairs or downstairs.

Hmm I can't find my ticket stub. It was downstairs in the back two thirds on the left.

I'll probably see Steve tonight so I mention it to him personally....
