DSL to DSL2

I swapped to DSL2 a while back and the dude said I didn't need to change to an ADSL2 modem, as I probably wouldn't get much of a speed increase.
I had a few line hassles and changed to an ADSL2 modem today anyway.
My DL speed went up by nearly 6 Mb/sec. I believe it depends on how far
from the exchange you are but I also don't believe the sales reps anymore.
Thought I'd mention it incase anyone else is in the same boat.

oooh... good to know.
I'm running a DSL2+ account with my old ADSL1 modem. It goes heaps faster than my old ADSL account with the same provider did, but more link speed is always good. Will look into it.

I upgraded from ADSL1 to 2, got a new modem...
went from 8mbit (as fast as adsl 1 will go)
plug in the new modem and bang... 8.5mbit.... waste of time and money!

Hey Marty, you back in town? It dpepends on how far you are from your exchange and what lines they have I think.
I'm getting 12.7 Mb/sec at home but I'm not too far from our exchange. I mean the phone exchange, not the pub with drag shows...

I'm supposed to get about 2Mbit and get around 1 most of the time.
I was told I was the furthest I could be from the exchange and still get ADSL (4km).
I've had a couple of people knock on the door recently and try and sell me wireless @ 512khz max speed.
Who would sign up for that???
All the commentators are right as far as I'm concerned, Oz does have the slowest and most expensive net in the developed world.

getting 5Mbit here...i've no idea where the exchange is
given the state of the copper telephone wiring in Australia i'm amazed that the internet works at all

I'm getting around 12 Mb now but I'm pretty close to the exchange. Optus DSL direct (ADSL2) but I grew a beard waiting on the phone for tech support to get it sorted.

Just because running big networks is my day job I thought I'd point out that as ADSL2 uses a different set of frequencies then ADSL1 if you get less then 8Mbit, or any unreliability with ADSL2 try switching to ADSL1 and it may well be better.
Also if you really rely on your DSL connection for business consider getting a high quality DSL modem, not neccesserily an expensive Cisco, but there are similar ones for pretty reasonable prices.
