The Daily Telegraph in Sydney today has a colour 2 page spread which is number 17 in it's "Classmate" series, which gives school students an insight into various industries that they may be wanting to join when they leave school. Today's feature: The Music Industry. It has descriptions of what people in the industry do, from producers and managers through engineers, "roadies" A&R, lighting directors and so on. In a stunning example of how out of touch the media has become, the article is directed squarely at the demographic that does not personally pay for any of the music or film or television industries' products, and does not ever intend to.



I propose a 100 point bonus question for the HSC:

"Since you and your friends have just spent 8 years copying, stealing and sharing music and movies, and since the idea of paying for anything that can be traded on the net is something that you consider stupid, please select from one of these choices:

A: I want to work in the music industry when I leave school, I will do it for free because no-one will want to pay me.
B: I want to be a musician or film maker, but I understand that me and my pals have trashed those industries, so instead I will become a sales associate in a chain store.
C: 42.

D : I want to become an audio engineer by doing an expensive course and expect, as promised, that every student has a chance of a job

The Uni course i do a bit of teaching for has a 98% employment rate for its graduates.
98% of grads get employed once,
after a year 50% have left the industry,
of those left only 5% is working in the sound field after 2 years.
that works out to be 1 sound guy(or girl) every 2 years.

I was told by a admin person at SAE that getting a job after there course in a CD shop classes as being in the industry. WTF????

I've heard that same thing before too. Certainly what you want to hear after having forked out, what is it? Ten grand a year?

Five bucks worth of hair wax, a pair of shiny white trainers and a know-it-all attitude is all it takes to work at HMV. Could have saved a bundle!

I can think of about seven people I know who've gone through SAE and only one is pursuing something even close to a career in sound-engineering. He's not making even CLOSE to a living from it though (though to be fair he's not much of a go-getter). Even so the stats are transparently dodgy.

There is a thread on GS about a band that spent a year making an album, and it's now for sale all over the web just 3 days after mastering, 8 weeks before it is due for release, and before the band even have a copy. Someone leaked it and Russian sites have it on sale.

This type of feral opportunistic internet behaviour will do no-one any good in the end. The net is a good barometer of morality, and sadly we are not doing very well.

I know of one SAE student who snared a well paying job in TV land....and he's spending most of his wages renting a warehouse with a few mates and buying gear. They set up a recording studio and he's got a bit of go so the studio may eventually be an earner.

That is so messed up. A lot of blood, sweat and tears fit into a year... They must be pretty disillusioned, to say the least.

every student can get a job... just do as we have. double your budget every year (then spend it on stuff) then in a few years you have enough to start you own job...i mean studio..

You just have to be patient, work hard, don't stray from your goals, and want it bad enough.
