what do you use, that works...

we run 2-4 seperate mixes and are currently using some old yamaha p2200 amps with resistor splitter boxes.. the amps live in the amp room and we have about 10 meters of cable under floor...

its noisy and the dynamics arent there. click tracks clunk, not click.

ive blown up a new class d amp (they said it would work, we argued about tying the - rails, they said it was ok.. it smoked..)

i can use a crest ca9 or quest c3000 i have lying around.. but what else.

rob do your amps make mechanical/fan noise? how many sets of cans can i run off each? (i can pit them in the live room with line ins..)

no noise from my amps ... except what comes out the speaker terminals

I'm looking at a job at the moment to provide 40 channels of stereo headphone outputs!!

I'm thinking that a variation of the Simplifier could be just the ticket. Or add a breakout box to an off the shelf Simplifier. It will drive at least 8 x 32ohm headphones easily.

Balanced in, you can float the ground to deal with earth loops. No controls, nothing to mess up.

I can testify to the quality of Robs headphone amps. He made me one a few months back and I am lined up for a second.

doesnt anyone have a good cans system...what are you using thats working for you.

even the big lavish ones seem to miss the point to me .

every time i get around to recording i have to reinvent the studios headphone system just for me.

i have one of those german beringer headphone amps , its great but it seems all the subsequent ones are crap .. isnt it always the way?

Nah Rick they are not crap, crap would be great in comparison to the new ones, they are like seashells, you can actually here the ocean in there.

Looks like I'll be needing a couple of those too. I bought a new be#$%&ger one and it is the noisiest amp I've ever heard, seriously, what a waste of $140.

the Rane 6 way jobbie works for us. Never a problem. One of Rob's is here too which I highly recommend.

I have often used P2200's into a DEX 4 way headphone splitters (resistors inside) and its great, loud, not noisy or click track clunky. I really only use it for one person at a time each however as I have 8 separate sends to musicians and never need for anyone to share a send. (unless its a choir or other large group)

making sure everyone has their own send eliminates a lot of problems straight away.

also have several of the berhinger 4700 4 way boxes, the only headphone box the make thats any good, all the other ones are rubbish. they get used 80% of the time and I get no complaints, I have them in the rooms so perhaps the short cable run also helps. however when I do get a "not loud/clear enough" complaint, that person gets a power amp setup in stereo and then they are happy.

also remember the more isolated a headphone is, the less power you need because there is less of the outside world (like a raging amp stack or drum kit) to compete with. however isolated phones can also work against you when the balance in the room is already quite good (like a everyone live in one room setup), then more open cans work better to just reinforce what's missing.

I really quite like the aviom mix it yourself type systems but there are 2 problems, firstly the cost is high if you have 5 -6 mixers, and secondly, I like to solo each send myself and hear what they are getting, you cant to that with those setups. I have often found important problems in a artists mix that they themselves have not complained about, like a bass player playing loose only to find he has no kik in his cans, or someone playing timidly because they have too much of themselves, but as requested by themselves. you can only find these problems if you solo their mix or go out and put on their cans.

Presonus HP60 does a great job for me..2 main stereo sources plus direct stereo input on every channel..Clean and loud..+ a talkback if you need..

I've got a Hearback system - runs on Cat 5 cable (like a poor man's Aviom) but only 8 channels instead of 16.

I set up a basic mix on a stereo buss and then add individual channels as requesteed by the band members. Never had a problem in 4 years except for last week when the power supply for the Hub cooked itself during a 24 hr session, but Daniel from Legacy sent me a new one overnight so no dramas.

Loud and clean and the bands and engineers like them.

A good off the shelf Headphone amp is a modular one from Elan Audio http://www.elan.com.au. We have about 50 of these, VCA control and balanced input. You can get them individually, run off +/- 15V rails or stick 4 in a utility Rack case with power supply. They are quiet, sound good and are hard to blow up, (Trust me Journos can kill almost anything-- we have one called "passion fingers" by all the techs).

They are not cheap though, but nothing quality is.

Anyone ever used the Neumann hp amps? Most of thier other old modules and cards rock I don't see why these would'nt either.
