Hi all

Does anyone know how to make the song title stay on the burnt disk?

More info, when you insert a commercial CD and open in the finder (mac of course) the song titles are there, but when I burn a disk (after inputing meta data in iTunes) etc opening the disk you just get audio track 1, 2 etc but I'd like to have the song title on the disk.

I use wave burner and toast for burning.

Thanks in advance (and sorry if this is easy but I'm ripping my hair trying to do this)

last time i checked, regular cd players dont actually burn song titles on, u need special cds for that kinda business.

There is however a website, which escapes me at the moment, which is like a database which recognises song count + song duration, and uses that to match albums as they are loaded into such programs as Windows Media player, etc.

However, this screws up sometimes...coz there MAAAAYY be a cd out there with the exact same 10 track config as urs. Albeit this is a rare occurance.

Thats how most cd's names are recognised, by being on that database...if no one posts the name of that site, ill ring the cd dup place that told me about it, and ask em and just post it up here :-)

Gracenote is the database I think you were referring to.

Hey thanks for this.

Yea can you upload the song/artist detail from itunes to the CDDB data base which will bring up the name etc but having the song title come up on the disk seems maybe to be a glass master only feature.

Rick can you confirm this, PLEASE :D

Check out this info on CD-TEXT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-Text

Looks like this option is available in waveburner - mentioned in this SOS article. (see Go Master section).

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan07/a ... h_0107.htm

Jkhuri is also correct, there are a number of online databases used by CD Ripping programs to pick up titles , based on number of tracks and length. There are a number of these - look for CDDB, freeDB and gracenote.

I know that compilation discs burnt in iTunes will be recognised on another computers iTunes.

Have also encountered a few commercial CDS with CD Text, bit by no means universal.

Suggest you try the CDText first, as this will not require the playing computer be on the internet, and you to have to go and register the CD on multiple databases.

Hope this helps

yes, that was the catch...my apologies on my shitty generalisation :)

some car stereos with text functions pick up stuff u may encode from a home burn, but computers and such my not! I think thats correct.

Comes down to the software or the OS. Possible that OSX isn't as smart as iTunes when it comes to using cdtext.

PC programs such as EAC and CDEX seem to recognise. Can't recall if explorer can read this, but pretty sure media player would.

If adding cdtext doesn't cause any problems, then might as well add it in, its bound to help someone at some point.

Cheers
Michael.

Thanks for the replies but I know how to do the grace DB and cd text but it's the title of the songs ON THE CD itself when opened in the finder.

If you insert many commercial CDs and just click on the disk when it appears on your desktop the songs are named there (this is not opening iTunes etc) and you don't have to be on the interwebs either.

Sorry for any confusion

i don't think the finder reads CD text? what does happen is that the OS keeps a database of every CD that you have previously loaded, so it might seem like magic but it is probably just matching the loaded CD to something already in the database.

from my experience i'm pretty sure that CD track names only come up in the finder after iTunes (or whatever app) has consulted the CDDB/Gracenote and retrieved the titles

and yes you can use iTunes to submit titles.

i can count on one hand the number of masters i have prepared using CD text... it's poorly supported and rarely requested.

For it to come up from a bought CD the way the OP describes, the metadata has to be inserted at mastering. Track names, ISRC codes UPC barcode numbers etc. Then it is carried through in the replication.

This sounds correct and A glass master seems to be the only way, is this correct.

In response to wez, I've bought CD's and without even being online the names appear...

On the other hand, I burnt a CD last week and added text, on a standalone burner (HHB 882). Playing back, they appeared on the (same) machine, then I put it in WMP (XP) on my laptop, which didn't read it. I then tried several commercial discs, and they didn't read, either. So I took the commercial ones to work (same OS), and they all read in WMP there.
The only difference, I guess, must be different versions of media player???

yes you add all that stuff during mastering, but not all combinations of OS/platform/software read and/or display it. i would think that if you took that CD and put it in 3 other machines with other configurations, your results would vary. my experience of testing multimedia and enhanced CDs on multiple PC and mac systems is that it's virtually impossible to cater for all the variables.

I actually wanted to have track info on my band's album but the replication place we used said they strip it all 'coz it can cause problems with some devices. On a PC it's very easy to add track names etc in Nero and most other burning packages.

A very helpful pirate uploaded the track info when they ripped our cd and uploaded it....
