Someone told me that universal is the only label making the moola now, this is mainly due to Def jam and geffen?

the only thing i really know about this stuff is that as all the labels merge into each other they should compliment each merger , by trading strengths and weaknesses ( like the real world) , but all i have ever seen is yet another roster of acts get their careers mucked up.

on the bright side if you have a little label with a great act or two, the artistic road is wide open for you.

mega labels are not in a position to make records just because somebody loves the music or has a vision for what it could be.

it times like these somebody discovers an elvis or a u2 and shows us all how its done.
get to it ( somebody....?)

Hey Rick that makes me feel a lot better.cheers.I think I found Australia's Snoop Doggydog.haha. Sorry everyone, though at least I'm finally getting a break.
Rick's right .It cost us nothing to make this record except time and patience and it looks set to pay off early next year, hopefully.Even if we only sell 500 copies it will be a profit, just don't let your kids listen.Though it's nothing Rodney Rude has'nt said before.

It is sad that when these label's merge all you get is a bigger bunch of people who don't know what to do. I've seen it from the inside and it's frightening how little the marketers know about marketing. I've seen rosters reduced because the share price of the parent corporation went down. At some point it all became about numbers rather than about a great artist and creativity. No label will spend time developing an act nowdays - they want a ready made success handed to them, along with their 84 percent of sales and payments to the artist's recoupment account.
I always thought it was funny that FM records could seriously call themselves an 'independant' label when they were owned by Uncle Rupert.
So like Rick says, the door is now open to the little guy, and the small devlopement/production companies to make the next big discoveries. They're the only ones who can afford to. While I think the last 10 years have been a downward vibe for the music scene as a whole, I also think it's a great time to be alive. Power is coming back to the people, and maybe music will be about music again someday soon.
Cheers,

AE
