Yes, I saw that on Rob's webpage.
I checked around the web before making the final bid.
I know the TGI stuff pretty well (AMAZING on drums), but I doubt this is too similar.
However, nearly all the UK studio/audio stuff from this period is fabulous IMO.
And Aussie I should say (AWA).
I'll definitely get Rob to fix it up, and I can't wait to hear it on guitar....... and drums.

thats what he paid for it years ago .

its about the current price as well .

Rob as reworked a few of them , i sold all my emi gear when the TG bug first hit years ago

this stuff is interesting but there is nothing TG EMI about it

Yeah, I agree they don't sound like tg stuff
I don't use them on drums as I have all my fave pre's for drums
but on electric guitar they have a great top end - and they distort really nicely too.

I dunno, guys, isn't Rick just keeping it real? He did say that the price was about right (ie you didn't get ripped off) and that the pres were "interesting" - which I understood to mean usable but not universal. He gave you the provenance for the units, and told us what we probably could have guessed - you don't get 4 x EMI TGs for $500 off ebay. Not cheerful, perhaps, but not exactly pouring cold water over your parade either.

that post and a run of recent things i have said , follow on my "reslipped' disc in my back , so i am way more grumpy then i need to be , and depending on the time of day ( after work ) , way more medicated then my lack of humour would show .

i think those pres have a great sense of 'crack" , there is nothing soggy about them , but you will need to get modded to seperate outs , whiich involves a bit of work by somebody who knows what they are doing .

they are not TG , not neve not api not anything other then oddball emi homebush location mixers built to forfill an abc contract

and yes folks if you like them there are HEAPS of them floating around undiscovered

hell they are all discrete well made and say EMI , 4 mike pres for $700 - its actually a huge bargain !
but lets not tell everybody.. huh

I would guess they are in the same ballpark as the AWA BAR pres and they were roughly, (or closely?) based on the RCA OB preamps. I have the AWA/s and while not being a one trick pony do have limitations to what i use em on. They have heaps of output so are good for ribbons. They arn't clean or quiet especially when gained up. Mine are germanium and crunch up in a nice way. I've used mine on snare, bass, vox & elec gitr. and room mic for the kit. They are the ants pants when you want to capture the effect at the source rather than relying on plugins like PSP's vintage warmer, or Magneto to get the effect........but over all they are totally useless lo fi bits of junk and nobody should even bother buying em when they occasionally pop up on eBay and the like! :)

no uk parts ,
all aussie
unlike some other emi stuff made in homebush which used uk trannies etc

it was made to work alongside the awa ones which where made to work alongside the rca ones for ABC outside broadcast purposes and specs

Emi/ thorn , used to make a lot of stuff in homebush, tv radio , telecommuncations stuff etc
its not rare just unknown

always in the most innapropriate locations... and usually crooked.

I guess there historical now so they have to stay.

They are meant to be removed you know ;)

but in reality I like them.

and the yellow ones have a 'security feature' and if you pull them off they never look legitimate any more.

(in case your wondering I have to look at them every day... so much in fact that I nearly have some of them memorised...)

I know they're NOT neve api etc...
but will they hold their own in there?

Will they work better than my Syteks?? hehe which I really don't enjoy next to neves etc
