Hi all.

It's looking quite likely that I am doing a live film/dvd in 2 weeks with an overseas artist. It's an acoustic show but will require a lot of crowd miking as it will be mixed in stereo and 5.1.

My main guy is on a gig in Darwin and has said he can do it but I am looking for another option in case that falls through.

Show must be recorded at 24/96 with no hiccups. You must have the ability to record a main and an identical backup simultaneously.

One vocal, one acoustic guitar. Lots of crowd. Enmore Theatre in Sydney.

Anyone?

If my gear were'nt packed into a wardrobe, with lots of other junk in front of it I'd be happy to do it, but it is so I can't.

Though still it's not fair leaving someone on standby either I reckon, either they get the job or they don't.

I always have a plan B.

This particular job is very important to me. I'm not risking anything, but I'll have a decision in the next few days. It won't be a "day of the gig" call.

I should clarify you're going to need to supply all gear/splitters/mics as well.

Why would you need splitters AND mics?

Splitters so as not to interfere with the house system.

Mics to mic the crowd/room appropriately.

Yeah I guess I agree there, she does'nt have many redeeming qualities.

This may be a side issue, but I would try to enlist at least a couple of mates to act as 'crew'.
You don't want to leave expensive audience mics unattended out in the auditorium.
They'll either be repeatedly knocked over and trampled on, or you'll find an unattached cable dangling from the stand and microphone gone.
Expect the worst, and be pleasantly surprised if everything works out well!

Valid point Chris.
I have some matched Neumann KM85's that could do crowd recording nicely..
However, I'd have to be chained to the stands if they were in use!!

DPA minitures hanging on the roof :-) problem solved, unlesss thieves get on the roof mid performance :P

Of course, the DPA owner has to get them up there first!

But anyway, I don't trust anyone in gig situations.
Always keep an eye on your gear and stay sober etc....

Nah, you guys are way off. I was planning on putting my U47 smack in the middle of the room. It'll be fine!

Thats a great idea, you could even lay it on the floor (in the most crowded spot for the best results) to get that "in the crowd" sound.

I'd put my hand up for this gig. I could do it, but Its to far up the road. I could do the melbourne show if you like??

Thanks but it needs to be Sydney. There's a 6 camera film crew, focus pullers, lighting, grip, data manager, etc, etc. Around 20 guys all up, all Sydney based. To move then would kill my budget.

I'd love to assist whomever is doing the job....my only fee would be that the engineer impart some of their knowledge. I'm more than happy to lug gear, set up mics, make coffee, whatever!!

Thanks for all the PM's guys. It's great to know there's such an enthusiastic community here. I've got it all sorted now. I'll try and post some pics and info as the event rolls on.

hey mate maybe be late but plan z if you are stuck i have a tdm pt rig 48k at 68 channel io unfortunatly but ready to go racked up portable done alot of live recordings in its time
along with a realy good arsinale of mics and pres racked once again portable no charge
i work off beer these day as the royalty checks seem to be in my favor
