Perhaps you can turn down the output of Windoze Media Player???
I know that in iTunes I have the volume around 70% at all times, anything louder and it is hitting the red

If you think the problem is wmplayer, try another player like iTunes from Apple (its free and you'll begin to see the difference quality can make). There could also be a problem with your CD drive (which would explain why MP3's play OK) or your computer might simply have low quality circuitry around the CD decoding paths. There was a good article by Stav in a recent Audio technology magazine that dealt with the problems of cheap opamps.
That said, computers are at best middling CD players - if you can get your audio signal out digitally and get it converted, amplified and played by dedicated equipment, you pick the difference right away.
