Came in to the suite today and did some house keeping. Was about to leave when the assistant asks if I can help her get a VO recording ready. Go into the booth to find my U47 power supply on and cable wired to the mic stand. Think to myself... "I was sure I put that away when I last used it". Open case to find U47 rolling around in wrong compartment of case. Pulse quickens, nostrils start to flare. Turns out a freelancer though it would be ok to use it yesterday when I wasn't there instead of the client's Rode. No idea how to put it together or any idea of the fragility or cost. Asked around the producers and they said I shouldn't leave it out.... even though it's closed, in its case, and tucked discreetly into the corner of the booth shelving.

So mad right now.

OK what about this scenario.
I left my car out on the street and some dick head who I don't know thought it was ok to take my car without my consent, left his rubbish in it and parked it around the corner.
So is this ok Mr Producer..........of course it's not you prawn.

complete rudeness and diseregard for others property aside, how on earth does someone get a studio job not knowing that all LDCs are pretty sensitive, and how on earth do they not know that anything someone else owns with Neuman written on it is worth more than their life?

Don't leave expensive equipment lying around is good advice. I'd put a note on top of of it for anyone who opens the box hinting that "you toucha my mic (without asking) I breaka you face".

Better hope they were'nt recording a kid with a lisp and braces, you could be picking thier breaky out of the grill for years to come.

Unbelievable really.

It doesn't even take knowledge of correct protocol for him to know that he did the wrong thing.
Simple good manners and respect for other people's property should have stayed his hand.

Didn't even have the courtesy to put it away properly or even switch it off???


Head on a platter after full invoice for mic rental paid. Then blacklist the mother#%@$er with every other studio you know.

The booth is part of our edit suite set up and it was a video editor who did the deed. He's been around long enough to know that mic only comes out when I'm there.

I'm moving the case and putting some details on the outside so hopefully it won't happen again.

edit... I'm also feeling better because I finally managed to snag myself a Yamaha D5000 delay unit. Been looking for one of those for a very long time.

There ya go, buying something can always cheer you up. It works for me.

If I am in a Studio and I can see something I think I can use it unless told otherwise...... I would think of it to be more the studios then an individuals. which is why I would think I could use it.

if there is a note or someone says no then so be it I respect it completly

I agree, if I hire a studio I expect that whatever is available in the studio is included UNLESS informed otherwise. If it is your personal equipment then it should either be locked away or notated as such. I hired a studio once on the basis of its equipment list and then when I arrived to start the session I started asking the assistant to set up various mics I'd seen on the equipment list. He looked around for them and couldn't find half the kit that was supposed to be there as various staff had taken it home, were using it elsewhere, loaned it to someone, no idea where that is.... Not happy...

On the other hand if its not a 'public' studio and all staff are locals then that stuff should certainly be widely known and definitely respected.

Private TV facility. Freelancer is hired by us to edit. Guy in question knows that the Wagner is mine and only used when I record voice. All others use Rode.

Neck the bastard. I hate that sh!t. I'm in a 4 room facility. I go to take a piss and come back to find a guy that is working in a different room, nothing to do with me, in my recording booth playing rockstar with my vintage Martin. I said "Hey, do you wanna put that down and leave thanks? He says "Oh sorry" and I say "totally uncool man, you don't just pick up sh!t that has nothing to do with you, do ya?" He scampers out and later I find out he said to the engineer in a completely different room that he was actually booked in - "Who's that guy, he's really agressive".
Agressive? He's lucky I didn't tear him a new a-hole.
He was back here recently, and didn't even say hi or ask how I was going :D
Almost forgot, his excuse was he didn't realize it was another person's studio (mine) he thought it was a 'play room' for clients. Play room? Sure, how about we play "lets see how far my foot goes up your @ss?"

Come on let's not wimp out. There is a legitimate place for a bit of verbal aggression, obviously not the out of control scenario but picking up a Martin and fooling around is definitely not on, even more so when visiting a studio. The guy needs to learn that lesson and in that context i don't take the " Neck the bastard" comment literally. And here's the "punch" line........Enough of the feminizing of masculinity.

Ahhhh bugger it Andy you shoulda just flogged him with an old sm58, actually a stereo pair would make a great set of studio nunnchukkas. Hmmmmm should post it in the DIY section. :)
