Is it only SM57's and 58's that are being faked? Or are there Beta fakes as well?

Yeah, there are fake betas, you bet
JANDS, which distributes Shure mics in Australia, has a free verification service if you need to get one checked out. They gave me a written report on a fake mic purchased off eBay that let me get my money back.

I bought a 58 off ebay a while back. It must have been a fake, it sounded terrible, think and crispy. Got rid of it.

As I think I've said before, I got a fake one ages ago. It's noticably lighter weight than a real one, it sounds ok at low volume, though brighter than a real 58. It sounds shithouse when screamed into. This doesn't do you any good until you have it in your hand though!
Buy from a reputable dealer, there are a few on ebay and it's still a lot cheaper than your local music shop (well, a lot cheaper than my local music shop!)
