I'm investigating the possibility of visiting Melbourne from Perth in November to record a pacific island band - drums, thongaphones, panpipes and vocals. Up to 10 musicians. Can anyone recommend a PT equipt quality studio with gear available? hoping for 3 isolated spaces and a vocal booth all with sight lines. Budget to be as small as possible!! Haha

hehe, ah Nymo... don't worry Pete it's a joke about this scam that someone tried.
Soo..Melbourne, you have a few scales of costs. At the top end is Sing Sing (Neve and SSL), great rooms a couple of awesome desks, just like a big studio used to be. On the more economical side, places that have the sort of space you would need, I'd suggest Atlantis Audio (nice Calrec), or Headgap (Neotak, big on analog). I haven't worked at Headgap but it looks good. The other place is Birdland (Neotek), but their space is maybe a little smaller still big enough, but they have awesome gear. Sing Sing, Atlantis and Bridland are all close to the city, Headgap is a little further out. (Preston)
There is one other place called Eastern Bloc, not far from the city but the owner is in the process of selling. He may be able to help. (MCI console)
Pacific Island band hey.... Where are they from? I've spent a fair bit of time in Vanuatu. I dream of opening a studio there when I'm older. Love those harmonies..

atlantis is great I work out of there alot and Dave is a champ. There's also soundpark, big room with iso rooms, lots of tasty outboard and cheap.

We're audio Luddites over this way so no PT. Speed and convenience would have destroyed the business plan.

You can bring em too my house and record there. They can play with my kids who no doubt would make themselves known.
My dog will also bark in the background, oh and then there's the bus, but its only every 20 minutes or so.

I hope some one asks this question again next year, things will be different.

I want to throw in Newmarket Studios in North Melbourne because it deserves a mention. I've recorded there a few times now, and they are extremely impressive. I've recorded at a few others mentioned here also such as Birdland and Atlantis. Birdland extremely good for rock and the best drum sounds come out of there.

Newmarket have done a lot of the kind of work you will be doing. Great gear, comfortable rooms. Give them a try. Oh, their console used to belong to Neil Young! Yep. And a lovely piano sound in that live room.

Thanks Vanderlae - another to put on the list. Particularly like the feature of "aesthetically pleasing straw matting" - should make the guys feel right at home.
Here's a web promotion consideration...
I could well make a choice based on room photos and layout, if a studio had a good enough range of photos uploaded, but what do I know, I don't even have time to keep a website! :)
