Its nice when you can save $100's of dollars by fixing your own motorbike up.
It gives you a great sense of satisfaction and achievement to do a job well done that you have not done before.
It gives you confidence that maybe next time I can try and fix up the next problem that needs replacing on the machine.
I just replaced the fuelcock on the bike which was a simple job but I am not that mechanically minded. Why dont the replacement parts come with the gaskets. I had to get my arty wife to cut some circles out on some gasket paper.
So why cant I do the same for having a go at DIY electronics?

Most preamps don't have gaskets, so you should be OK

making a piece of gear or something else for the studio is a great feeling. I've got gpultecs, gssls, various vintage mic pre's, some diffusors and various gear that i've repaired etc. Ripper feeling when it comes out right, shit feeling when it comes out bad...
But doesn't stop me trying! Or stop me servicing, repairing and restoring my motorbike either, what have you got?

i feel ya! i've built and tuned two hot 1966 valiants with a screwdriver and a roll of bailing wire.i've built 1176, joe meek, ssl and la2a clones, neve-ish and api-ish things as well as numerous guitar pedals. got vari-mu compressors and tube preamps yet to build. modded all sorts of stuff.

what i'm really excited about right now is repurposing a little steam engine. maybe to run a dynamo to generate 9VDC. would that be cool - steam powered guitar pedals?


(other ideas have included steam powered toilet seat lifter, or cradle-rocker maybe?)

the meek is opto cell for gain reduction, one channel with discrete opamps, other with DIP8's, OEP in/out trannies. great on bass, also slower vocals. and chunky guitar. really sloww and sticky compression.

the first valiant was a VC sedan slant 6, triple dual throat webers, column-shift auto trans modded for full manual operation (instant shifts)
the second was a VC safari hearse - black with full chrome trimmings, 318 V8 on straight gas.
god i miss that one.

it's the fabio board, known i think as the 'joe cheap'

very cool opto build, with way way too many options for different layouts.

if you cant locate it on prodigy, let me know and i'll go through my records properly.
