Is anyone else tempted by the 50% off on HD system they have just advertised? I have an old 002 that i could trade. This could make the jump to HD a little less painless. Or is there something around the corner that is bigger and better and we pay good money for old rope?

Most probably unveiled @ NAMM !

I don't have any detail (but I understand HD cards (pcie) will be compat with
that sustem)....but don't quote me !

May even be a FGPA card.

If they do go that route i wonder what type of interface it will use.......

yeah i was tempted, but im going to stick with my LE rig for the time being and invest in some more acoustic treatment....

Guaranteed to be a digidesign interface that you have to use. They should just make a DAW that works with any interface.

Hi Barney. Here is a good discussion on PSW with input from some close to the workings.There is some good info in this thread that could help you research your decision. Many of the engineers who have Protools HD etc offer opinions on which was they will go and why. Personally i would look very carefully at he options before jumping onto the Protools discount offer.

If there is a successor to HD coming you can bet your bottom dollar as soon as it arrives the "old" HD rigs will plummet in price. Digi is trying to move stock before it all becomes worthless.

Yeah I told Nic a few years back that I'd buy a HD rig when I can get one for $1500. Won't be long now. :) I hate losing money on digital gear. :( :( :(

Chris, i've been watching the PSW thread too. Think i'll sit on my hands for a little while longer.

Is it just me or why does the feeling of buying digital gear make me feel uneasy where as great analogue gear makes my smile always! and every time I use it!

Me too with that one. I'm not against digital in the way that it's horses for courses, so i have in digital what i need to get the job done at what i work out as the best quality option for money for my way of working. Audio fad and fashion take the back seat. But with my analogue gear it's a mix of fashion, fad and function without compromising quality, collected carefully over the years of working and these gear purchases are the long term dwellers in my studio racks and setup.

Avid are greedy bastards
We painfully spent (borrowed) nearly $100k at BJB only 6 years ago for our HD systems.
Also had to buy all the plugs 3 times for each system.
Personally I'm running a 002 with a Mytek 8x192 - and I am really happy staying there and not giving them another cent!
I'll be buggered if I am going to give them more of my hard earned money.
As soon as one can effortlessly between a PTools session onto another platform like Logic - then I'm outa here
Greedy Bastards - their hardware/convertors have always been shit!

Hardly surprising that they are trying something new to shift units. Their main market is in recession and tightening their belts.

Cut margins, re-brand, outsource... Sounds like a company trying to stay afloat to me.

Not sure if they are struggling but sounds more like general large business practice to me. Looking for cost savings in all areas, reducing doubling up in areas, improving profitabilty, maximizing shareholder value etc...It's just a shame when the staff are impacted negatively though.

I wonder if the pricing will increase coming under the Avid brand or if they'll keep it as is?

According to Avid shareholder info they have posted loses for something like the last 5 quarters.

I don't think that is much consolation to avid shareholders who watched their shares drop from $35US to under $10US.
