replacement ribbon for mics?

Just wondering if anyone knows how to soure replacement ribbon material for ribbon mics. I've been mucking around with a couple of chinese ones, re-tensioning etc and I broke one of the ribbons (the other 3 survived miraculously). Alternatively, any techs that have re-ribboning experience around the place?

It seems pretty hard to get and I don't want to go down the alfoil route. The mic was pretty cheap so just getting another new one is probably the way to go but......

Glen Phimister in Marrickville Sydney does re-ribboning. Mainly RCA. I don't have his number with me but someone else may chime in and pass it on.

I had an ribbon break in one of my Chinese mics - the cost of a reribbon is not much less than a new mic.

I initially did an alfoil job on it - good for a test run, and results on guitar amp were ok, pretty dull on anything else. Apparently the home brand foils are best as they tend to be thinner than the name brands.

I then tried the other home job source, which is to buy silver leaf from an art store - I got a pack from ekersleys in york st sydney for around $12.00.

Much better results - very fiddly though. If you have already been playing with your mics then you might want to give this a go, and if you are not happy then I am sure Glen will sort you out.

There is also a source of aluminum foil sheets in the US or UK (cant recall) where you can buy smallish sheets and they are available at various thicknesses - you need to google around gearslutz and tapeop or similar forums and you will find some info.
