Got this for myself for christmass the other day.
Look's like some sort of old valve PA . Might be good for parts or something?

Great stuff Chris, where did you pick it up from?

Found it in a shearing shed out the back of Omeo.

Those shearing shed pas are crap I have had about 8 of them
Over the years they are never loud enough what you might like to try is using them as a valve varimu limiter
in that application they are something truely special:)

Have a close look at the model number Chris. Does it say 1G58250 or 2G58250?

Yeah check it out. The reason I ask is mine is a 1G58. Its the only one i've seen, all the rest say 2G58. The difference is the 1G has a rectifier valve and the 2G does not (words from Andrew Kay).
But they sound the same.

Rick this Fairchild model has become a myth. If you have proof that it exists, like a photo or something, please let the world see it.
I heard that there were only 30 fairchild AWA's ever made. Any info???

Oh I know where one is and I am pretty sure I started the myth but it was straight from the horses mouth from a former managing director of awa

the damnest thing is vintage king have bought and sold several of them
out of newzealand but they don't even have a photo!

You know it would be a shame if it can't be documented for people to know about. These AWA valve limiters are still quite unknown, but at least we have pics of some models now.
Hey rick have you ever come across the green one in the pic. Model no: G7021 from MHB productions in the USA.

Im not sure if this pic is the AWA fairchild as it looks similar in layout to the G58. But I've had this pic on my old computer for years. Rick can you identify it. Unfortunatly the image is too small to make out much.

Thats actually a G54. Different beast. I believe Rob Squire would know all there is to know about it as he rebuilt it.

Chris...so wat are your plans for that old AWA PA?

let me give you a small piece of advice...do not, repeat, do not let anyone frig around with its fundamentals. By all means get it re-capped, get the tubes tested, matched and replaced if necessary. But the most extensive mod you should get done is to install a mains power on switch. That can be handy.
Don't be tempted to add attack and release controls or fiddle with threshold mods. Fully operational, these are perfect just the way they are.

Really appreciate the advice Rob as i was wondering about such matters as attack release but really didn't want to mess with it. Definitely wouldn't do anything without seeking advice from those who know from experience. Advice taken on board.

that's interesting. mine has attack and release mods (mind you, it'd done INSIDE the unit, don't let anyone change the front panel) which I think work pretty well. i don't think it's changed the sound, but who knows I haven't really used one side-by-side with an un-modded one.

the only 'mod' i did was take the little metal badge that sits inside the unit (and says AWA G58 250 with the serial #) and put it on the front under the meter.

have fun - using this thing on vocals is cheating! it's seriously like having someone that knows the song intimately riding the fader. it's hard to make it sound bad!!

my standard female vocal chain goes U47w -> V72 -> G58.

90% of the time, it works everytime...

the black one is smaller that most awa limiters and has a meter just like the green one so i am intriged about the green one

i will see if i can think of another excuse to hassle the owner of the black one and get a picture of it just to make it worth even more money to get him to sell it to me :(

Looks to me like the two small dials in th middle are attack and release controls. They have been added. Possibly the threshold and the power also.
