Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know it's basically the same as the UMT70S except cardioid only.
I have a UMT70S which I absolutely adore, so would jump on the MT71 for $800 if i had the $$

ooh.. I'm not great at descriptions! I mainly use it for vocals, and love the results. it's not ridiculously bright, and the top end is nicely detailed and not harsh.. I haven't found myself having to use a deesser. I've also gotten good use out of it as a room mic and for hand percussion..

Thanks James
I took the plunge..I guess it's an investment at the end of the day, and more importantly a sonic option, now i just have to wait for it's arrival!!!
Thanks for your time..

a real M7 capsule but no transformer so a little light in the warmth department, but put it through a fat mic pre (telefunken V72/76) and you are golden!!

Hey adamcal..
is that something you can mod? i happen to have a spare transformer (peluso type, maybe cinemag or one of his customs) that's not doing much.....
thanks

Sure, you can mod anything if time/space/budget and technical ability allows.
Ben sneesby once told me he can mod this this mic into a multipattern tube mic, so perhaps ask him for more info.

yeah I have Ben's modded Gefell here.
It's the one on his site
Also had a um70 which I ended up selling. loved that mic but i got RF in my suburb.
Newer ones apparently don't get RF but no transformer.
Ben's mod actually means you can't interchange bases. but that was for a 692 base for the threaded UM70 capsule not sure if thats for the Mt71S
Sounds great though. Mids are alot, alot thicker.
I'd absolutely buy it for $800 - is it available, if you don't want it :D

Hey it arrived...
nice and compact microphone.......and sounds fairly neutral on my speaking voice, really solid build, cannot wait to try it on vox and acoustic guitar....gonna be a while b 4 i can test it out though..gotta build a studio now!!!...
thanks for the advice given by all......
I have now changed my location to Berringa.....near Ballarat.....so if there is any like minded humans nearby give me a yell!!!
Thanks
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy,
Welcome to Golden Plains Shire! I'm just down the road in Bannockburn. No studio I'm afraid though!
Cheers,
Matthew

Oi!!!
Actually I reckon we've spoken, Jeremy... did you ring me from Darwin last year some time?
Anyhow, hi and welcome to our world!
I spent a lot of my youth roaming the bush near Berringa at Staffordshire Reef - great memories.
Call in and say gidday sometime.
