Can anyone tell me about these? They're originally designed for broadcast installs as far as I can tell.
Anyone able to comment on the sonic characteristics?

the design of the 5000 series console has broadcast written all over it. Soundwise they are very capable console, bearing in mind that like the 4000 series that they run VCA faders. The EQ and compressor modules are worthy things to rack up. A full console needs a good tech standing by to maintain it. They run very hot and whilst not especially unreliable can be fearsomely difficult to repair. There is a miriad of ways consoles were loaded and optioned, ranging from a powerful studio console to a basic broadcast mixer.

Thanks Rob. Looking at a small sub mixer, just pre's with a separate PSU. I quite liked the bass sounds I got at Level 7 on the SSL there, which is the reason I decided to get into the X-Rack. As the modules I had purchased have not materialised I figured this might be a good alternative.

Back in the day (80's and 90's) no one I worked with rated the SSL pre's.
The big plus for SSL was the mixing capabilities (computer/recall) and the punchy compressors.
I'm not sure specifically about the 5000 series, but I've read negative comment about it around the web.
Don't shoot me, as you normally do, disregard instead, but if I was after a sub mixer, it would probably be something else.
If I was after a rock solid mix console with a bit of an 80's/90's vibe, it would be SSL.

Hi Kristian!
Did you get ripped off with those modules? Pay but not receive the goods? I hope not. What kind of setup were you looking at? Basic summing setup or 4k eq and dynamics?

It's cool Chris, everyone has different views on what sounds good to them.
I really liked the bass sounds from level 7 which were just DI'd through the console. They were very rich, full and clean sounding to my ears and gave us a lot to work with in the mix. I'm just after some for tracking purposes. No summing modules or anything, just some channel strips. I have my TG500 and NV500 for colour, need something super clean for voice over work.
Dwane, the guy is refunding my money. I have no idea why he didn't just send the pre's but anyway, as long as I get my cash back I'm happy enough.

These wouldn't happen to be SSL 5000 modules coming from the UK by any chance?

I think Kris was buying X-Rack modules, I doubt he was buying from that audiojunkie scum, well I hope not anyway cause he's ripped a lot of people.

No, definitely not Sam aka Audio Junkie.
I purchased 2 x XRack pre's from a chap in the USA, paid for them, paid extra for fast shipping etc and then it all kind of fell apart. But it's close to being sorted now. First time it's ever happened to me.
I have spotted a 5000 series sub mixer that looks like it could be great for V/O work as well as maybe tracking drums or sub-mixing guitar mics.

I hope it works out. Definitely sounds strange. I'm in the middle of eBay bungles as well. I sold something to a guy in Holland, and has since claimed that it isn't as described. He has refused to return it for a full refund (including original shipping costs), instead he states that refunding a 1/4 of the sales price is "in both our best interests".
I asked because I think our friend Sam is still selling SSL 5000 modules via ebay.co.uk. At least that's the impression I had from some of the listings.

ughh..
Ebay disputes suck.
Escalate it to paypal.. if paypal sides on his side (It probably will, it mostly sides with the buyer) , the buyer must send it to you and provide proof that they did, then they will be refunded.
If they don't provide proof that they have sent it to you within 7 or 10 days, you'll be returned your money.
they might give you a negative feedback, but so what.. in one year, that will no longer reflect in your feedback.

I'm hesitant to file a paypal claim. The offer for a full refund when it's returned is a genuine offer. He just wants me to blindly give
him part of the sales price back "to settle the difference"... I'm not doing that. For one, I don't know the guy. He or I can't prove that his claims are true about the item not being as described until I see the item. And secondly, if it really isn't described correctly I'm taking it back to where I purchased it from for a full refund... which happens to be $400 more than what I sold it for.
I've contacted eBay's 'trust and safety' department about the issue. So hopefully that holds some weight with paypal as well. At the moment I feel like the guy is trying to blackmail me. It's ridiculous.

You're right.
It sounds too much like a scam to get a discount on the winning bid.
Full refund on return is kosher and the best you can offer IMO.
I wouldn't hesitate to call this guy out to Ebay and paypal admins.
BTW, one or two negatives in an otherwise unblemished record does not put me off. I know their are some crazy people out there in Ebayland.
