Recording Studio in Melbourne with a good vibe?

A Melbourne-based friend of mine wishes to record a few songs with me but is unable to travel up to BJB where I prefer to track. Instead, I am going to fly down to him.

Are there any studios in Melbourne with a similar vibe to BJB? I've been Google-ing around all day and all I seem to find are super-slick studios like Sing Sing or below-par home studios...
I'm looking for a comfortable space with vintage gear and a nice sounding room. No shiny bells attached!

Thoughts?

atlantissound.com.au

and

headgap.com.au

and

soundpark studios

all good places with cool gear, good vibes and different approaches. I like all of them and have used atlantis a lot, soundpark a bit and headgap not at all but love the work thats come out of there and will be using it in the future.
Best to call them and speak in person but I reckon you couldn't go wrong with any of them.

I'll vouch for headgap. not a big focus on outboard, but a f*cking great sounding tracking room, and a massive neotek console to boot. a bit 'cleaner' than bjb - not in any kind of hygiene way, just a word i would use to describe it.

i've always wanted to do something at hothouse - probably a little closer to the bjb style.

woodstock? has an old neve. but no control/tracking isolation(?). i believe the engineer is in the same room as the players..

ohhh Melbourne, you Melbourne peeps should feel pretty lucky to have such a great vibrant music scene with cool venues and a great selection of studios to play in.
Makes me want to pick up sticks...........almost.

Yeah, there is definately a studio for all occasions down here at the moment.

Which is good because there are bands and musicians everywhere and the more good studio experiences people have the more likely they are to use a studio off into the future.

Could not agree more. I'm always up for a good studio experience. Make it sound great and have a good time is most important.

Studio culture these days is - you pick whichever way you want to use the studio in your project.
Although it makes much more sense to keep it in the studio if your project suits that scope.

:+)

+1 for Houthouse. Have been in there plenty of times and the vibe is great as are the people.

Another option if Northcote (10 minutes from the cbd) suits your friend

fair bit of vintage, 2", and so on. As for vibe, only the artist in question can decide that one.
