NEW Pro tools system PICS
Could this be the fabled new addition to the Pro Tools system?

Re: NEW Pro tools system PICS
Looks like it's designed to compete more closely with Presonus and the like than current digi-00X range. Obviously dependant on price, but it looks cheap and cheerful.
Maybe it will be widen the gap between home stuff and pro stuff, may be good news for real studios.

Why didn't they do something significant.
I'm ready for a big change in system but this little manoeuvre doesn't cut it.

Lets wait and see what happens to the LE system. Though we could be waiting for some time for some change in that system.

Re: NEW Pro tools system PICS
no changes on the LE software yet so this portable 'HD' interface is still not portable cause it has to plugged into a desktop?
wierd. if its 'omni' why not do both hd and le from the same box? track somewhere then take it home and mix on HD. I've actually got two complete systems simply because I mix in HD but do lots of multitrack recording on location and LE systems just dont cut the mustard. So frustrating!!!

That is pretty funny that they missed out 2 lock nuts for the jack sockets.. on a promo pic. What a slacker.

edit - though, it could just be a photoshopped mockup.

Re: NEW Pro tools system PICS
hmm, yeah I was thinking, HD and Avid/Digidesign don't go together without the pricetag. Shame, as it's basically has the same in/outs etc to the MBox 2 Pro. Personally I'd be more interested in something like a semi-professional 1U rackmount MBox style firewire interface with better pre's. They need a 1U unit that fits in the product range somewhere between the MBox Pro and the 002 IMO.

If you want great sounding protools
get a 002 and send it to black lion
even they say the headroom is better in the BL 002 than their modded 192 i/0

Looks like a HD native system is on the way. This pic was leaked on the Sweetwater site but has now been pulled down.
Interesting times.

I think someone was sacked from Sweetwater for leaking info about these new products. Little do they realise that it has ultimately helped the promo of avid gear.

Considering we're in the business of sound... shouldn't we at least wait until we've heard (objectively) the new device before writing it off?
Just a thought.

Re: NEW Pro tools system PICS
Every thread on the internet about this thing is full of seemingly irate slandering of it...
I'm actually a bit perplexed as to why when a piece of equipment is announced like this and it doesn't suit someone's needs and wallet they immediately slag it off on internet forums. Is the uproar because so many still can't afford the price of admission? If so, there are a million and one other audio interfaces out there with a smaller price tag that will run with every other major DAW, just buy one of those and try not to loose too much sleep. I'm sure there are people in the world who already own HD cards to whom the range and density of digital and analogue I/O on this unit will suit perfectly, much more so than the existing 96 and 196. As Kris pointed out, if it sounds good too, what's to slag off?
I'm not going to buy one because I can't afford to at the moment, nor does it's plethora of digital connections suit my needs, but that neither makes me feel irate or feel the need to hang shit on them in audio forums.

i hear what you are saying. I'm still utterly disappointed though as AVID seem to have given up on any real technical innovation regarding their audio range. A lot of interesting things have happened in the last two, three, four years in digital processing power and related products. I remember when HD hit the shelves... I would have uttered "Wow! 192khz!". Even with the icon, that thing is a beast that no other company really created in such a large format. HD is pretty damn old at present. I was hoping for something a little more... breathtaking. But it seems AVID, with every release, are taking smaller and smaller steps. HD native would be interesting though, but does it really press a lot of faith in the continued improvement in DSP/hardware processing technology? The going rumour is that HD native will still have a DSP powered mix engine to minimize latency, just no plugin DSP.
One thing to consider, a digidesign representative stated in an AES video that ADC was coming for LE (this was when protools 7 was released over 2 years ago). Still nothing... but a whole lot of new products keep appearing. If I was using LE i'd be spitting chips! Digidesign listened to it's customers and provided them with unparalleled support. Combined with great products, this is what made Digidesign and protools so great. All signs seem to point to the wheels starting to fall off at present though.
According to a photo in the manual of the omni's I/O settings in protools, it will only accept 8 ins and 8 outs in total. If that is the case, it is truly depressing and rather pathetic given the apparent $4000aus RRP pricetag and the comprehensive set of digital connections on the back of the unit. I hope it is wrong!

Wow, if that is the case it seems REALLY silly to have all those different I/O options! Surely not! at least I hope not!

There's no way that thing costs $4k. I could get the new Apogee Symphony for that much.
This thing is more in line with the MOTU 828 range.... at first glance.
Happy to be proven wrong.

And dont forget you still need the PCIe cards for HD so you're still looking at 15K or so... I don't know why they think they'll grow their market with that price bracket.

When I first heard $3995AUS RRP I didn't believe it either.
...then I noticed it is hitting the shelves in the US for $2995. So, $4k is probably about right.
