I'm mixing an EP for a band that was recorded elsewhere and they're being quite insistent that I replace or at least augment the snare drum with samples. I'm one from the school of getting good sounds and leaving it well alone, but it's their EP and if they want me to replace it, that's what I gotsta do!

Anyway, the point of all this is I don't have any samples because I don't really do this kind of thing normally. I mean I have done it, and I know how, but I just don't really have any samples floating around that would suit this kind of indie music.

Where do you guys go for samples for sound replacer?

Make your own, buy them or get some magazine that has heaps of free royalty free ones.
Actually you could most likely get royalty free ones online.
Isnt there like free ones in Pro Tools with soft synths you get?
I think PT also comes with Sampltank LE which has some drum sounds.
The hardest part wont be finding the sound but actually replacing the samples.
I for one have never had to do it yet. I, like you, reckon its better to get it right at the start. But hey if they want to pay for it then give the client what they want.

You need to make sure they pay for their 'insistence' on doing that.

I use both programs a lot. Sometimes total sound replacement, others I stack multiple samples under the original snare... other times I use the triggered snare to send to reverb only so the snare verb is clean of any bleed. I have bucket loads of good samples.... if you want to out source that facet of your production I am happy to do it.

+1 on steve slate drums.

my cheaper method of doing this is a well eq'd and limited LM-1 kick drum. Using samples and having the velocity match the volume of the drum sample is vital when using 1 static sample.

I use drumagog and works very well for this.

I'm a bit of a vinyl hoarder, and we often have record nights where we drink beers and play records looking for samples.. be it drums, a single hit, anything that takes our fancy really.

I guess some people would frown upon this, but using old samples is part of our music.

But for the hell of it, I recently paid for some disco drum samples on ebay, and some of them are truly damn good. best $10 I ever spent with regards to drums samples.

this attitude in people startles me....there's about 30 years of music history hinged on the very act of people doing this very thing.

I hate sound replacing too..not that this helps you in your case but something I always do is at the end of tracking the drums in a session i get the drummer to record samples for me. It has saved me hunting for a sample more than once when there was a miss-hit or such....

Yeah that's a good idea, I get them to do this from time to time. Cymbal hits are especially useful for cleaning up the end of a song if the drummer put his sticks down too early or something

At the beginning of each new session i always create a sample library of the drummers kit to add/ replace / blend or do whatever it takes to get the band "their" best sound
and in getting them "their" best sound that also means sampling from any source and adding anything to make the record sound good

I find that sound replacer is good up to a point but it never gets the samples sample accurate so you end up moving em by hand
This is tedious work but it does get a better result than sound replacer if you are blending a snare sample in with the original snare sound
and having each kick sample separate is great for muting those extra over played kick hits
if your head space is in whatever it takes to get the best record then that will rub off on the band and you will all have alignment in the record making process

for rock to metal the clearmountain samples with modified ADSR (reducing the reverb) usually always sound good on snare

those royalty free CDs are someone elses work,sampled from someone elses record
if that works for you then that works for you.

however every sample IS someone elses work

Throughout the 90s tom lord alge pretty much had the same snare sound on every record ,hmmm now how can that be

Your point is interesting, as for me there is this real stigma around samples and replacements
it really polarizes peoples opinions,
have a listen to nevermind, you can hear the original snare drum playing more than the snare sample on drum fills
yet most people associate nirvana with raw grunge and that's all real man!

I like to work in the area of "whatever it takes"

we have been doing a lot of "reamp/sound replace" sessions. its part of our business that growing. some sessions without clients, they send us the files, we replace, and send the files back.

we have created all of out own drum samples... it helps to have 4 drummers as staff and over 30 snare drums and probably 20+ drum kits available at any time..

you can use your own or use a static sample.

drumagog / spl /slate are all options.

remember you cant 100% replace because the snare is in the oh/room etc so its more of a meatier aid.
what i have done before is get a sample of the snare, run it through a culture vulture so it is a big distorted mess.
and triggered that.

same samples but heavy in mids and already super compressed with overtones. its a sound.

If you're on a Mac, Logic Pro 9 has a "sound replacer" . Works well and comes with it's own bank of samples eg. 30 or so snares with velocity switching, same for toms and kicks.
