New Avid Converters - M Box Update

Postby Hybrid88 » Sun Sep 19, 2010 3:53 am

How have I not heard of this yet?

Kind of a hushed release, apologies if this is second-hand news.

Following the HD compatible range released previously, we now have an updated M Box range for the rest of us mere mortals...

Practically same features as the old ones, but more importantly has a completely new audio path and pre design, sounds like a very welcome upgrade from what I've heard from past M Box users, interesting. And new insert jacks for integrating hardware outboard, now that's very cool IMO.

Will definitely be adding the M Box Pro to my wishlist, been seriously wanting to jump onto the Pro Tools platform for a looong time :p

Thoughts?

Hopefully it works well!

I have to ask, why are they marketing it as a "a complete, integrated, computer-based music creation and production system"...

...then highlighting it can do 192khz sample rates.
...then making a point to outline that protools LE doesn't support anything above 96khz?

Perhaps Protools 9 isn't far away?

Yeah future-proofing I guess.

Interesting you say that, were there issues with the old MBox's?

If I was Avid, I'd be looking for a whole new way.
They've had a great opportunity (with the consolidation) to reinvent their product line and technologies. It's pretty much the same just rehashed.

I've been pretty happy with my current issue mbox pro for laptop based protools LE stuff. Of course I'd love it if I could run HD on the laptop or Latency free blah blah or use my fireface800 with PT but considering the situation the mbox pro is a good unit and has been very stable through pt7.4 to current and across a number osx upgrades too. Feature set is reasonable for price and the spdif means I can bypass the mbox's converters too.

I've got inserts on my 2003 original MBox. It's a shame that it's not supported past PTLE 8.01
