Interested to hear peoples experiences and comparisons in sound quality to other quality LDC...

I've got an old DC96 and i think it's a nice Mic, but hasn't got a lot of character, a bit, but not like my RCA 44 kinda thing, but i used it on a snare for a jazz session and it sounded absolutely wonderful.... it hasn't got as pad on it though, which would have been handy..

What do you think they are worth? and where else would you use them?

How much... HHmm.. i bought them before Rode Mic's came out and halved the price of most Mics..... they're not too cheap....2nd hand perhaps under a grand but more than $500

I'd use them on Horns, vocals .. haven't done much on it, but i will from now for a bit and try and get more familiar with it's sound, i tend not tuse it much but will now..

Hey Jeff, I used your DC96 on the recent jazz session I did in your studio also. I agree that it sounds wonderful & would go so far as to say it's the best mic I've heard on snare, except you can only rarely use it because it overloads too easily.

Regrettably, I haven't tried their LDCs but I did pick up a pair of SDC commissioned for the original audio install at Parliament House. There was a chap in Canberra selling a few of these a couple of years back. They're tailored for that application, I suppose, but they sound pretty good.

I notice that there have been a few Milabs on ebay recently, from the US and the Australian distributor.

yep you couldn't walk out the door without tripping over those parliament house mics for a while, there were a few of them around (still one or two in the swoppy i think)... obviously they were tailored for spoken voice, and have a pretty sharp LF rolloff. but hey they're swedish. är svenska, är bra.

I have a pair of '70's Milabs with the rectangular diaphragms, they sound awesome. Put the two of them on a concert grand once at Westlake 4 in LA and the producer's jaw dropped.

I think we have a pair of those Parliament house mics at the studio too. I dont think ive ever used them though.

Back when I used to work at another studio they had 5 or 6 of the rectangular ones. Used them on piano, horns, woodwind etc... They sound great in these applications.

And you used them instead of what mics?

Well they used to come out for big band work or anything that needed lots of mics. I would nomally have Geffel 930's, 800's, 70.1's, 300's, Neumann 84's and U87's, out at the same time. I knew the Milabs sound good on the horns or woodwind so they would normally end up there first or a pair on the piano.

I read somwhere...probably AT, that Chesky used the Milab rectangular capsule in their custom made mics for their blumlein recordings so that's a bit of an endorsement i suppose.

Not sure about Chesky, but Waterlily Acoustics used the Milab rectangular capsules in that beast of a mic they used for their recordings, like Ry Cooder's 'A Meeting By the River'. That's an amazing sounding cd.
