I know he's a cold-hard businessman but this just sounds sociopathic (from the smarcompany story):

Not any more, we have seen a MASSIVE drop in OS enrolments in this country, it's a absolute disaster for the education industry.

"Earlier this week, Monash University, Australia's largest international education provider, announced 350 redundancies in response to a 30 per cent drop in demand in its university preparation college, which relies on foreign students".

i have just been talking to one of the monash guys while i was in melbourne working on some stuff last week , he took the offered redundancy after 25 years

what we have done without the obvious forsight now showing up as much needed in regards to our local universities and tax payers dollars
is australia has geared up and expand our universities to cater for the first and 2nd stream of non english students desperate for an "english speaking " education - this has happened world over as well its not just our plight

what the parents and country leaders of the non english speaking students have done subsiquent to that is build their own english speaking universities on home turf and offered employment to the best of the english speaking academia to run them !
we makes perfect sense to me now i think about it

combine 6 new mega english speaking unis in china and 5 in india with the near parity aussie / usa dollar and it didn't make sense to send your kids with out serious consideration to australia/england or canada for an education this and next year !

As for the sae... well nothing is straight forward when applying " the misner factor " is it ?

it could be great things for the rest of his crew or it could be troubled times on the horizon ... time will wash that out

well i reckon your $50,000 is insignifcant compared to the numbers being bandied about for the sale of SAE so i reckon you take your place and stand in line accordingly

as for the new owners of SAE if they are not part of a global asset portfolio thing based in a non english speaking country i will be VERY surprised !

i have read the misner factor book cover to cover many times , i know Tom on a professional and courteous basis only
i suggest everybody interested read his book , you will then understand less then you currently do about the misner factor
its a strange read

This was personally handed to me while I was studying in SAE. I should have got Uncle Tom to sign it for me.
It is an easy read and gives an insight to the early dealings of Tom.

to clarify my previous post - SAE has campuses in or close to most of the regions Aus (and elsewhere) is currently drawing international students from. There is, in my experience, greater (though still not significant) demand and opportunity for the skill set that a uni degree in multimedia / sound / video production provides in SE Asia and other (rapidly) developing economies and that's where the market will most likely be for Navitas going forward.

One of the other interesting trends is Uni's from english speaking countries establishing campuses OS that offer their most popular degree courses to the OS market, staffed by english speaking lecturers at (I assume) lower cost and higher profit than delivering the equivalent training in Aus.

i'm not so sure about that. there are two things in my mind:

1) australia got a seriously bad rap with the bashing of indian students. in adelaide at least, it killed the indian student market by over 50%.

2) thanks to our mining sector, our dollar has overtaken most other currencies to turn our education sector from favourable to expensive. if you've got money and you're in china or india, you don't care about cost. so in essence, we're competing against europe and the US for foreign students, not with their local universities.

Getting foreign students is a good thing, not a bad thing. People mistakenly think that these people are taking our university places - they're not. Our tertiary institutions (and associated infrastructure in facilities and accommodation) have expanded rapidly because of foreign students paying top dollar. if they didn't come, our universities would be much smaller.

Australia is still highly regarded for education abroad, and probably always will be. But at the moment, the indians don't think it's safe and many people would rather go to the US, where they have the best Universities in the world for less money.

its not the exodus of indian students doing the damage apparently its the non enrolling in advance chinese sector

my notes on the subject are on a reported to me basis not my belief system

i dont have a great belief in 60 % of the universties courses i am aware of in australia
ithink the other 40 % are SO essential i just choose to ignore the whole
"tertiary education can be a huge waste of money while the kids grow up and wonder what to do with there lives fiasco " that rises in my mind from time to time

i figure is does so much more good then harm .. let it roll on

it may not be what you expected or feel like value for money at the time
and the formal route may take you places you never expected or nowhere at all

geez, I wonder if my chances of the SAE paying my invoices on time has just improved or diminished?

So far my music tech degree has taken me around the world working on some very interesting projects with some amazing people.

In the last six months I have been to seven countries and am currently trying to figure out the logistics of research trips to south-america and asia in the next year.

I'm not working full-time in a studio but I am working with music and audio tech constantly and applying what I learned in my degree.

It's not where I thought I wanted to be when I started out - actually much more interesting.

With the massive investment in accommodation for OS students, this is bound to have an impact on the local accommodation market. Around Deakin Uni there are several several new student accommodation building projects on the go at the moment.

i'll remember not to go to the byronian next time i'm in byron anyway.

So why not start up TurtleSchool, for all of us on the fringes of the industry who are SAE-skeptical but would pay up for *real* education. 10 people, $200 bucks each, Turtle Rock-n-Roll Mastering 101 on a Thursday night?

Or more trouble than it's worth to do something that isn't core business?

Great idea! I'd be pretty keen on "mixing masterclasses" too- 5-6 people bring a long a mix each, and everyone listens and offers some criticism, headed up by a paid adjudicator/expert. Would be pretty fun!
