Argh that's a shame, I'm sure you could still do something interesting with the keys/chassis of that keyboard.

Reminds me of my annual studio/workshop clean-up 3 years ago when I was living in Bundeena and it was council clean time... A customer drove up there to collect a repair, and he told me that he knew which house on the street was mine, it was the one with the Prophet 5 and the JX-8P on the grass next to the curb.

Still got my pismo (same case but better processor). Its at the back of the filing cabinet and I know that I could pull it tomorrow take it to gig and fire up my max patches it'd still be rock solid. It once fell 5 meters from the back of a theatre seating riser on to a concrete floor about 5 minutes after we had transferred the nights show control setup to the theatre computer. Picked it up expecting to be looking for a new computer in the morning but it worked flawlessly (with only a small crack in the case) for another 2 years before I upgraded. Can't imagine many laptops 10 years old and still going strong like that baby...

Great story Myles. I remember the Pismos, but I had the earlier model back away. Can't say I ever dropped mine on concrete, but it did go on set and gigs all over and captured sound in swamp terrain, midnight winter hillsides in the middle of nowhere hoised on cranes and a bunch of other slightly more mundane places. I still have mine tucked away too, but haven't used it for a good few yrs.

I see your Pismo and raise you a Powerbook 165c, which i could never quite bring myself to sell... the thought of only getting $1000 for it was just too sad, so i hung onto it....

Funny story...a couple of years ago I bought another Pismo and took the HD out of the old one and replaced etc
You know which one i threw away...yeah the good one

The one in the picture is the old one !
Don't worry ...theres a PC under those other Macs lol

Loving the photo John. Reminds me of all the summer cleanup that's been going on in my world lately!

We can laugh (or cry) about this now, but with the rise of general-purpose computers being used instead of proprietary platforms (Fairlight notwithstanding!), we'll probably have less occasion in the future. Even Macs, which used to hold their value very well, are now commodity items.

I remember early on when I was getting started in this digital audio thing I was sold an obsolete secondhand Yamaha CBX D5 buy some scumbag use to worked at electric factory . he even told me to call electric factory who were the distributor of Logic audio"the software i was using at the time" about the units compatibility and when I did the guy at electric factory (one of his mates I am sure!) said that the CBX D5 compatibility software a was to be release in one weeks time but when I called after I had purchased the obsolete box form the maggot! The guy at electric factory said that compatibility was not possible!! $1300 down the drain I was young poor and had saved for months! I held onto that unit for a good 3 years hoping I could put it to some use but eventually dumped it in a Garbage skip very sad indeed ....
