Peluso shockmounts?

These mounts look pretty sturdy to me, but google isn't giving me any results for Australian stockists. They are for Neumanns: U87 and KM84. Anyone know of?

I'm looking at:

i have seen a bunch of them i am not a fan
the screw up clamp stripped on a couple i have seen within the bunch plus they just dont quite look well enough made to last to me
i reckon you should be able to put a shockmount on and leave it on for thirty years untill the rubber gives out
if they are not lasting 2 years ... well

beezneez make some that fit the usual suspects and look good to me

and i have noticed a 2nd run of the chinese types just appeared on ebay that look to solve the peluso issues but i havent seen one yet

Oh, well I might stay away from them if they aren't stayers. The Sneesmonster lurks around here, no? I might get in touch with him in that case. Thanks Rick...

Hi Dave. I've both the beezneez for 87 and peluso for my 84's. Both are fine. I'd go with Ben's shocks ...not only because he's got a sexy first name :) .......but.....because he's got great local product.

Might be posted quicker?

Did your new 87 arrive safe and sound?

Hiya Ben. I've sent Ben S an email and hope to hear back shortly on what he's got.

The U87 has landed, so safe - yes. Sound? Well, that will be for Gunter to tell because as we found out someone had "rebuilt it in the 90s" - which for an early 70s mic, seems a little foolish. Done by some renowned person now passed away, but anyway - I'll know what's what soon enough. Nervously optimistic that it was simply serviced and not taken to by someone who thought they could improve on a classic.

Are the Peluso shocks for the 84s solid? Yours are new, right? I could see how the larger cradles might be a little shady compared to Ben's products - and even I think Barney may have commented about the screws being not so fancy (?!), but the small ones looked very tight. But a photo is just a photo, I s'pose.

Hey David,

Who rebuilt your U87? Stephen Paul or Fred Cameron?

Best,

Mike

I have 2 of these screw type shockmounts - bloody annoying to use.
Sometimes I need a mic for a quick application and I think - great I'll grab a Neumann - then I think of screwing those dodgy shockmounts . I have found myself so pissed off with them that I reach for another mic to avoid the fiddly crap.
The threads on them are dodgy and difficult to turn - and so painfully slow to use.
I hope Ben makes a good shockmount like Gunter's ones for the Wagner that use the clips instead of screws - they are so fast to set-up/pack-up - a joy to use - and safe.
I need 2....

all the ones of bens i have seen have clips , but his are painted silver not electroplated with nickle and look a little chunky
(overengineered..?)
there are a 2nd gen ones on ebay right now with clips which have turned up in the last couple of months as well they look like the real deal but time will tell

Hi Mike,

It was Stephan Paul who rebuilt it. I don't know anything about this guy, but I haven't googled him either.

So...the mic arrived today, and lo and behold - there was a cradle included! What's more, I sent a photo of it to Gunter because one of the vertical bars has come off and he tells me it looks like an original Nuemann. So that's good. The screw mechanism is really tight still and Gunter thinks he'll be able to perform dentistry on it when I send up the 87, so I'm hoping that means one less cradle to shell out for.

stephen paul WAS the guru for mics back in the day - but the exact opposite of gunter in thought process
IMO gunter strives to make them like the day they left the factory with a couple of upgrade tickles to a later or earlier circuit if you request them

stephen paul strived to make them what he thought was greatly better then the original - this could be a simple thing or massive but usually he replaced the skins with ultra light ones and reworked the circuits heavily .
that makes his microphones worth MUCH more if it sounds good - many heavyweights engineers in the usa used to swear by his mods
or ...err.. MUCH less if the sound isnt to your liking .

personally i would bet that an early 70s u87 in great nick sounds very different to a stephen paul modded one

stephen made a lot of money doing his thing and it would have been very expensive to have it done - with a year or two wait .

but in the end .. you tell us

if i had a stephen paul u87 i would make sure it works properly then leave it alone untill the capsule dies -
it will probably be not what you were expecting
and probably be much better then you imagined :)
good score i think

Brilliant. That's $150 saved.
Dave, do the lulu mic clips fit 84's?? I'm guessing they do. Hmmm,,, not shock though...

Oh yeah? Well you know Rick, here I was thinking that I'd bought a mic that had possibly been given a handicap when in fact it has been to gentlemans college! I didn't even see the notation on the ebay listing about it having been rebuilt by him because my iPhone app that I used (moving transition = no internet) failed to show that extra bit. So it was disappointing news but now it seems it's the best news you could ask for...if you belong to that camp.

Well I haven't so much as opened it up let alone would be able to tell anything from doing so, but I'll be super keen to hear what Gunter makes of it. To me it wouldn't be cost effective to replace it back to its former glory anyway if all it needs is a service/clean. I'll wait for the verdict. And of course, and possibly disappointing for someone like you and others to hear, but the comparison may be lost on me because I haven't used 87s before which removes the anchor point. I ran Barney's 80s U87 through a few tests (vocal/guitar) a while back, so I have a fair idea of what they sound like now but that's about it. And that was lovely, just didn't jump to me for some reason. So it sounds like this thing might not only jump to me, but embrace me in that gone with the wind style. We'll see!

I know! Very cool. I mean it will cost me something for Gunter to make it better, but if it's an original Nuemann AND it will last me another 10 years then I'll come out on top anyway.

hey david
i know gunter pretty well and for a long time
i know what he generally says stephen pauls ideas - they are just not the same as neumanns etc

the only problem i see for you for you now is you will have to get another old 87 to see if you like this one or not
what a problem to have :)

have had the peluso's on our U87's for a few years now.
have been pretty good except for a few things.

the two bolt/nuts that tighten the rings are a little fiddly to work with, and the nut can easily be lost if undone.
The thread that attaches to the mic stand will strip easily if not used with extreme care, we have been through 3 thread assemblys so far.

pretty sure beezneez one's are made in china but are a custom order for ben.

Hi David,

Stephen Paul mods cost a bucket.I had a stephen Paul U87 here a few years back.It was a healthy mic that sounded very impressive. For me, it ate stock 70's U87's for breakfast.I dont know what all the fuss is over U87's though.(You can stumble upon the odd magical exception though).Recently people appear to be infatuated with them. They are a solid mic that performs suitably in a number of applications, but rarely do they give me a hard on.I believe the attraction for a considerable amount of people is they get to add a 'vintage Neumann' to their locker without having to eat crumbs for months in an effort to own M49,M269,U47 etc. They still have bragging rights ..... "yep, we got vintage Neumanns here".....On the optimistic side, if you determine that your Stephen Paul U87 is not to your taste buds sonically and the thinner Stephen Paul membrane is up to snuff, you may very well be able to sell it for what you paid for it, or possibly more.

Best of luck with your Neumann, Gunters TLC is worth its weight in gold.We are fortunate to have him downunder.

Mike

I like well-built suspension mounts. But regarding the Peluso branded mounts, I've owned two of them, but have since parted ways with both - which might tell you something. ;)

I haven't heard back from Ben S yet re shockmounts, so I'm still after a cradle for the KM84. I saw this on eBay - don't know if anyone has encountered them before, but they 'look' okay. Clamp looks handy... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Shock-Mount-Neum ... 500wt_1156

I assume you mean the seller miketube is actually John Peluso.

That would fit, given that the eBay item location is given as "WILLIS, VA, United States", and the address on the Peluso Microphone Lab LLC web site is also given as Willis VA. /:)

Shipping is almost as much as the cradle itself, a local product - or at least locally stocked product - would be good.
