Melbourne Planetarium
Sorry for the general location of this post but my memory is really bad and I can't remember who it was that did a huge museum install recently.
Anyway, whoever it was, this may appeal to you. It came in my inbox today.
REQUEST FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Melbourne Planetarium Production
Seasons Show; half-hour fulldome show.
Brief to Composer and Sound Designer
BACKGROUND
Museum Victoria requires the services of a Composer and Sound Designer for a new production of the Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks. The production has the working title “The Seasons Show” and the audience is general public, school groups, and family groups with specific emphasis on ages 8 – 12 years old (grades 3 & 4).
We are currently inviting expressions of interest to provide a formal quote on this work, by FRIDAY 26TH February 2011.
About the Planetarium
A planetarium presents a simulated display of the night sky that allows people to enjoy the wonder of the stars in a comfortable environment regardless of the time of day – or the weather.
The Melbourne Planetarium is located at Scienceworks Museum in Spotswood. It features a 16m domed ceiling, reclining seats, a full-dome immersive video projection system, and a 5.1 surround sound system. All of these elements combine to produce a unique experience that addresses the many exciting aspects of astronomy.
Melbourne Planetarium shows are informative and entertaining for a wide range of audiences. Each show involves a half-hour pre-recorded audiovisual feature that explores a scientific topic from an angle that is entertaining and always educational. Melbourne Planetarium shows employ the talents of some of Australia’s most creative scriptwriters, actors, visual designers, composers and sound post-production professionals.
Every show is followed by a live presentation of the current night sky and the major astronomical objects that can be seen. The information presented in these sessions allows anyone to go into their backyard at night and experience the joy of astronomy.
SCOPE OF WORK
The aim of the assignment is to ensure that Museum Victoria will receive a fully mixed soundtrack for the production comprising music, sound effects and dialogue, and that this soundtrack achieves a standard of creative composition and technical execution at the highest level. The Composer and Sound Designer will be required to deliver this fully mixed soundtrack based on creative interpretation of the script and visual work supplied, and the technical requirements of the Planetarium.
The Planetarium dome has a custom-built surround sound audio system. The speaker system consists of 11 large JBL monitor speakers, with side baffles, suspended above the dome from the building shell. In addition, an array of sub-woofer speakers is located in the front of the Planetarium between the main entry/exit doors. The monitor speakers radiate through the perforated dome; nine are positioned in three groups of three with two others located singularly. One group is located centrally and just forward of the zenith. The other two groups of three are further down and to the left and right. The two single speakers are further around to the left and right, hence providing the ‘rear left’ and ‘rear right’ channels.
It is expected that the Composer and Sound Designer will take full advantage of the creative possibilities resulting from this unique sound space.
In order to meet this objective, the Composer and Sound Designer will provide Museum Victoria with:
Post-production facilities and technical personnel capable of achieving the assignment aim;
Advice and expertise relevant to the Planetarium’s technical specifications and assignment aims;
· Fully composed musical and sound effects for a 30 minute show & a trailer (no more than 3 minutes), including the Composition, Score Preparation, Studio Recording, Effects Creation, Producing, Lay-up and Premixing;
· This music will be comprised of walk in/out music, background music, theme music, incidental music, and song/s with lyric if necessary (given the target audience for this show, the Contractor may propose the inclusion of a song).
· Contract musicians to perform the score if necessary;
· Any instrument hire, transport etc;
Drafts of the melodies and musical effects for assessment by Museum Victoria during the production;
· Correct correspondence to any external artist regarding the incorporation of existing music materials if necessary, and clearance of this work;
· Editing of voice tracks as per the script and direction of the Planetarium Production Manager
Visuals will be supplied to the Composer and Sound Designer on DVD with timecode as scenes are locked off.
The Final Deliverables are:
A final mix down as separate tracks either .aiff or .wav files, and also a final mix down as .ac3 files. Separate tracks relate to centre, front left, front right, rear left, rear right, and the sub-woofer. The software to run the final show in the Dome will play all these tracks as .ac3 files.
· A stereo mix of the final mix.
· A final mix as an M&E version (in case over dubbing of the voice track is required).
· A CD copy of fully mixed soundtrack including voice, music and effects.
· In consultation with the Planetarium Production Manager, a 90 - 120 second final music and sound mix for a marketing trailer based on music from the production (on CD). These files will need to be delivered as both separate tracks either .aiff or .wav files; and also as .ac3 files.
It is envisaged that approximately 6 meetings, involving review sessions of work in progress, will be held between the Planetarium’s Production Manager and Production Team and the Composer and Sound Designer. These meetings and review sessions will take place at the Planetarium, usually outside normal planetarium show times when the Dome is available. If preferred by the Composer and Sound Designer, pre-mixing and mixing of the sound can be carried out on site, during the hours when shows are not scheduled. Otherwise, it is anticipated that all the work will be carried out in the Composer and Sound Designer’s own facilities.
Anticipated Timeline
