both forum members love and cherish the good old heavy audio stuff with the big black knobs

one forum member looks at the dodgy photos, and the typos in the ebay add and of course the ridulous asking price and takes it upon himself to ask the seller some very rude and smartarse questions about wether the lathes come with the flux capacitor or not just to mess with their heads
( we all know a flux capacitor is the imaginary thing in the movie back to the future... right ?)

the first forum member probably got a good laugh out of being so clever and mean .

the other forum member could not understand what two neumann lathes that originally cost $570,000 each were doing in a shed in wagga wagga, so he gently asked the seller a few curious and polite questions.

the real question going through his head was not why would they discribe the equipment the wrong way but more like if a guy bought two neumann disc cutting lathes in the late 80s for hundreds of thousands of dollars and put them in his back shed in wagga , WHAT else does he have in his shed ?

i just spent the weekend in wagga wagga, and cleaned out the shed,

the neumann disc cutting lathes will be installed at turtlerock over the next month or so and i will spend the next few years gloating about all the other stuff that i got.

and it was a deal in which the owners were made very happy
they got a bit of spending money and met a new friend that understood and could discribe to them exactly what it was their father was doing in the back shed for all those years !
and that new friend will restore and use their fathers most cherished items that they know will be well loved for a long time to come

and of course they did not have to send all his old heavy audio stuff to the tip feeling guilty about it for the next ten years !

chris you really need to rethink your computer/people skills at the moment ,
it was an absolute walk up deal and all you had to do was be a little nice to the kind folks whose elderly father had passed away.

Wow... what a great story!

Having grown up in Dubbo (of all places), I've heard some very similar stories of guys finding the most amazing stuff cleaning out old rooms and garages in town AND on farms that haven't been touched in years, in the process discovering some vintage gear in excellent (and not so excellent) quality that's been loved by some old guy for yonks, then packed up and stored away by his ill-informed kids... you must be stoked.

I thought I was the only person who grew up in Dubbo. Or as I like to call it the middle of NSW asshole...... that being said A really close friend of mine who still pursues music in Dubbo has picked up similar sorts of stuff in a similar situation........
He picked up a 73 super lead marshall and quad for $500, just because the person who had it was a music person and thought it was an old peice of crap that a family member had..... the guy who sold it was suprised somone would pay $500 for it, they guy who bought it was suprised someone would sell it for $500 win win situation for both.....

an old guy used to send us laquers at festival to process and press from dubbo in the 80s, lousy quality but he must have had a studio in a shed somewhere, i cant find him so best of luck to all the dubbodians

rick, there's always two sides to the story. you should know this.

I actually sent another question first, asking if they would separate the 4-track from the lathes (as I have no use for a lathe, no matter how good a deal it is). That question was genuine and polite - "Hi, would you consider separating the tape machine from the lathes? thanks, wagrecords." I'd love an AG440 4-track 1/2" to go with my AG440-8 I already have.

I didn't get an answer back, so I sent another question to see if they were genuine sellers or not.

Well, they answered that question as everyone can see. And so?

If anything Rick, I don't see why the question I asked was being 'clever and mean'. Sure, I can be an w@nker sometimes but since when has everyone started taking themselves so seriously? No-one was harmed in the sending of that email (even though alot of electrons were inconvenienced).

I'm sure you got some 'deals' that you'll be more than happy to gloat about, but I don't see why my question on ebone should be the main subject of a thread on this forum. People ask stupid questions all the time and i've got my fair share of retarded questions about stuff I've sold.

Why don't you tell us what you got instead? I'm sure that would make much more interesting reading.

the 440 will be unloaded with the rest of the haul in a week or so , so if you want it you can have it ( minus expenses).

besides the gloat factor i was just making the point that we both looked at it from the same angle but with different views on the best way to proceed.
my feeling with old heavy stuff is there is always more then meets the eye thats how i have "found" most things
as for what i got, come on by and have a look when i unload it
you will be surprised.

Well I don't think I'm that much of a w#nker as to go deliberately upsetting old people - I'm sorry they took my question so personally, I re-read it and still think it's pretty harmless. I actually was trying to be funny and clever, not mean and clever.

I thought their answer was pretty funny too.

I have been told time and time again by people that know me that I'm going to turn out to be a grumpy old man. I vehemently disagree with them, saying that I believe I already am a grumpy old man.

Wow Ausrock, that's a big call - have you actually met Linear Chris? Seen his studio? Heard his product? Surely that's the reason to recommend or not recommend someone. If people were shot for bad ebay posts (or bad forum posts), we'd all be in danger! Lets keep it about the music.

Before somebody comes around to my studio with an AK47, I want to clarify a few things:

- Some time ago I was trawling ebone for stuff I probably don't need;
- I came across the listing for the ampex and neumann lathes, with things mis-spelt all over the place (sterio/vinly etc)
- I thought it may have been a bogus listing - as there are lots on ebone, but I sent a polite enquiry about separating the tape machine from the lathes first.
- I didn't hear back, so I (rightly or wrongly) sent another pointy email.
- Rick (with the wisdom of his years) contacts the seller and finds that they are genuine.
- He buys all their cool stuff and i'm supposed to be jealous.
- It then gets posted on the forum as a lesson in being nice.

Well I can cop it on the chin, no problems. And next time, I'll probably think twice about sending retarded questions in the public domain that is the world wide waste of time.

I write enough crap, so I don't mind it when people write crap back at/to me. But let's remember, they're just words and I never made a personal attack on anyone.

And Ausrock, why don't you say what you really think? What is everyone so afraid of? A good start would be to use your real name, rather than hide behind a veil of anonymity.

Yesterday I was repairing a Midas console in a warehouse of a big PA hire company and one of the guys calls my attention as says " Hey i got these big funny looking things out the back, would you know what they are?"
Sure lets see these big things.....Oh, they are a RCA 44 ribbon mics. Hey lets hook up some wire and see if they work....Sure do.
"Where did you find these" I ask, to which he replies "I met this guy from the country who has this whole giant shed full of this sort of stuff".

I'm trying to follow Rick's example and be nice to these good people.

Looks like i too could be making a trip to the country.

And.....for what it's worth...Chris ( Linear ) seems to be a pretty pleasant bloke to me.

When i first started up my studio I actualy bought most of my stuff from an old guy in dubbo that had a studio in his shed. If it wasnt for him i would probably still be using my 4 track and still be a gardener.

This causes me physical pain... Dunno how it works but some guys must just have very fortunate skeletons, every bone in their body is lucky...

Whilst i'm probbly just butting my head in to something that's none of my buissines I also feel a strange urge to do so.

Reading this thread at first has made me extreamly jelous or Rick expecialy as my fiance is from Wagga and I vist regualy,untill I realised I wouldn't have the cash anyway or the use to cut records.

Secondly I found Ausrock's comments a little out of line until I actualy read Chris's question (very poor form).You've probbly noticed my spelling isn't 100% also but it dosn't make me an idiot. I think the sellers response proved the same being in his case as well. Maybe Chris had a bad day.

BTW although I don't have alot of experience on Ebay this didn't appear all that dodgy to me.

Hey Rick when you say you cleaned out his shead did you take those curtains as well. If so I am now extreamly jelous.

you know you reeeally do not NEEED all that OLD out of date stuff that will drive you CRAAZY come time for parts for restoration ....

constant replacing of valves , mechanical parts ... alaigning , biasing ...

I thought digital was the way to go !!!
