So - on a whim I bought this Zephyr mic that was advertised as a ribbon.



Only problem is it comes attached to the following connector (Acme 2 pin) which I think might be a connection for CB radio gear?



Thinking I've bought a lemon here and there's no obvious / easy way to get inside the body of the mic to see how the connector is attached. But just in case - can anyone suggest whethere there's an adapter available or if I'll be able to solder on an XLR connector (I'm guessing this is an unbalanced connector and is wired like a mono jack)?

cut it off and wire it on an xlr unbalanced/ bridged - it might work..?
but some old mics need a balancing and impedance matching transformer
for them to make a decent sound
a connector like that one would make me suspicious towards the latter

I have a bunch of old Zephyr ribbons. A couple of them have the two prong connector like in the pic. I think the actual case (of the connector) when connected acts as the ground. Not sure but this is what I was told. They sound great also.

so it'd be wired pin 1 +, pine 2 - with the connector being ground and, I assume, connected to the shielding?

Guess I'll cut the end off and see...

Did you find out weather or not it is a ribbon mic?
What I did with my old aussie ribbons was to rewire and replace the transformmer with a lundahal 2912 and even more importantly replace the ribbon with 1.8 or 2.5 micron Aluminium because with all of my old mics I have found to have really thick aluminium like cooking foil or chocky wrapper! I will post some audio examples on my blog soon!
