http://www.guitargear.net.au/discussion/ is a pretty good Aussie forum if you're not in a rush. I've tried the consignment route with no luck at all, but always sold through forums, and then eBay if they're not moving.

Chris,

Problem with consignment is you often need to agree to have to agree to them having the guitar for a certain amount of time (like 3 months), and while the sticker prices always look impressive from the point of view of a potential seller, you are normally looking at 20-30+% as commission. Some places will agree on a price they give you, and wear discounting out of their cut. A mate of mine had a SRV strat on consignment and it did not sell for 3 months.

Let me know if you are in sydney and I can give you some ideas of who might be able to help (and an idea of the price range you are looking for)

You should post more details / pics and expected price here or the other forums suuggested as a starting point. You never know your luck, and if someone here picks it up then its going to a good home.

Otherwise you could try ebay, even a highish buy it now price with the make offer option, if you can do that in aus.

Though it seems sometimes you get a better result if you start low and then a bidding frenzy happens at the last minute, risk is that you are bound to sell if this doesn't happen.

Thanks Mike,
I appreciate that. I am in sydney and will be away for a month and a bit so I don't mind leaving it in someones possession for that long

thanks everyone else for your advice

i think ebay only really kicks when the dollar is down

Okay is the 72 guitar a common colour or a rare colour?
Depends what you are after on it. Are you after market value or close to it, then consignment would be the best bet. Send it to Jacksons rare guitars. I have sent mine there over the years and have been very happy with the results. If it is all original you could be looking at around 6 months to sell. They take 25% (from memory) but its well worth the hassle as they can get the best dollar for it.
Otherwise I have sold my Taylor on Gumtree for a little less then $4k in about 2 months. Ebay is not good unless you want a quick sale for low bucks. Another good forum is MELBAND. I also found that advertising it everywhere is great and then leading all those advertisedments to your ebay sale can create a bit of a bidding fenzy (but not always). Geez I am giving away my hot tips here for free.
Also if someone makes an offer close to what you want just bite the bullet and takethe offer and move on with life. Life is too short to worry about losing a couple of hundred bucks here or there. Hope this helps.
Cheers

If you do wish to persue the consignment options, then as Dale mentioned would be worth talking to Jacksons. While you are in Annandale also have a chat to the guys at Global Vintage, depending on what they have they may or may not be interested, but they will tell you up front one way or another. I used them to sell an amp for me back when they first set up and was pretty happy with how it all went.

The other guy who floats abit below the radar is Matt from http://www.mattsvintageguitars.com/. Although he does not have a shopfront, seems he has a bit of a network of buyers, looking at his site at the moment he seems to have a few of the non tele/strat type fenders, so may be worth a chat. He has been around for a while and used to work at Jacksons for quite a while.

Finally, wild horse guitars in surrey hills would be worth having a chat to also. They do seem to have a some vintage guitars amonght their stuff. They have always been helpful without trying to sell me anything the few times I have been in there, although I have not used them to sell or buy anything.

Cheers

Forget Jacksons - they will sell your guitar for 5 times the price they recommend you sell it for.
Global vintage is the much better option - Rene' is a good man.

Who cares what Jacksons sell it for. You get what you want. I personally dont begrudge anyone earning their extra as long as I get what I want. Golden rule is always leave something in it for someone else. Life is too short to worry about whether you could have gotten an extra couple of dollars.
Peace and love dudes

Hey I've dealt with Rene before so I'll give that a crack after I try selling it online or doing a trade.

I agree Jacksons it overpriced but it's a means to an end.
