Hi All,
I am hunting for Retro looking PA mis for a theatre show I am looking after. The references I have been give is attached. I just though I would ask if people knew of any modern mic that has a similar look or if anyone knew where to findorignial something similar to this. I have to present a few different options to the designer and director so any ideas are welcome. Last note is the mics have to work, BUT if all I can find is a shell I am happy to fit a little DPA of something similar inside.
Thanks
Tony

Going by the first photo you could just paint a 57 silver.. You get mics that are a known quantity sound-wise and look retro. Actually, 1965 (sm57 released) is pretty retro anyway isn't it?

Thanks for the reply Kurt, unfortunatly the first thing the designer said is " I don't want a 57 modded to look try and like something else", I am guessung a few people had had the same idea as you, I know I did

Certainly do, the shure 55sh, already have 3 on order, the design needs a few mics with a few different looks. Just wish he wanted a nice large condenser, that I would be all over

The first one might be badged "Midland" but the grille section looks just like it came off a '60s vintage Aiwa I threw out a while back.

A bit of searching and I found the first one is indeed a Midland mic I am not sure about the Awia thing but I am off to search them now.

I've seen quite a few retro looking mics on Ebay Australia over the years.
I think there are a few vintage radio collectors who trade.

Back in the mid to late '60's (when we were all just young boys) the Aiwa's were all the go, they were OK but the lead was a fragile as it gets, find some of those and you will be right on the money. I'll have a look around.

Hi Tony,
OK the top one is Midland but more commonly found as a Calrad DM-21.
The one in the middle is an American D8. Not very common.
The last one is an Electro-Voice 630.
The Calrad DM-21 and the Electro-Voice 630 should be reasonably easy to find but I'd expect you might have some difficulty locating an American D8.
How soon do you need them?
Cheers

Thanks Chaps, for the info and the links, all great stuff.
Greg- I am hoping to have the mics in 2 weeks so they can start to use them in rehearsals, but if needs be it can take a bit longer and the can just work with some stand ins. The show bumps in in 4 weeks so my dead line is set for that. I would have been onto it much earlier however the design team have only just changed the plan from DPA lapel radio mics to 'vintage' wired mics.
