Hi there,

I have a Soundcraft TS 12 24 ch which has 2 power supplies.

Turned it on this morning and then came back after 5 minutes to the acrid smell of electrical burning.

The 24v meter light has disappeared from the B power supply.
all the other 5 lights are on.

I am NOT a tech , so excuse the following questions..

Is this usually a serious thing?? (I've had a look inside..and thats scary!)

Can I run the console on the A power supply??(there is no automation)

Can I damage the console running on one power supply ??
(I had to do a mix this morning and used it for an hour with the A PSU Only)

What does the second power supply actually do ??

usually big consoles have a number of supplies to run different bits of the console
like the audio on one , the logic ( switches ) on another maybe a different one for the automation

i know very little about your console so its only a guess, but my feeling is if your 24 volt rail has blown and your using the b supply (24 volt) & the b supply runs the automation your fine to keep using it
but 24 volts for automation sounds a little odd

probably the b supply runs the extra channels if your board was built to be expanded but was shipped with out lots of extra channels

ie making it upgradable by just buying more channels or buckets and not having to rewire.

it sounds like its time you had a tech come around
where is the board located ..?

the good news is that it will likely be a simple repair as long as the transformer is not damaged

Usually the "B" supply runs the right hand side of the console. However if the whole console is working then the two supplies are diode mixed to share the current draw. This means that running on one PSU is making it work twice as hard, check how hot it is getting. Also you might get background hum if the supply is overloaded and it drops out of regulation.

Go crazy and spend some bucks on a tech to fix it for you!
