Hi all,

I've landed a job in Hobart and will be moving down sometime in April. I know there's a few Tassie folk lurking round these parts, would love any advice that you think might help with the move south.

I simply adored Hobart when I visited back in 2010.

yeah, what's the gig? Hobart (and tasmania in general) is a great place to live, lots of good people and lots of good places to live/visit/hike/explore. say hi to my family when you bump in to them (you will, trust me).

Audio related gig in Hobart, still working through paperwork so not really able to guvee more details on a public forum just yet. Will be a fun adventure I.

Its much warmer than Canberra and Golbourne and most of the higher altitude places in NSW and Vic.
In fact - In winter I cant stand the cold in Surry Hills after leaving Tassie - seriously!

Exactly Jamil - Melbourne is totally exposed to the freezing winds from Antarctica
Sydney is fully exposed to the freezing winds from the Snowy mountains
Hobart is protected from the Antarctic winds by large mountains

still need a F@#$ing nose warmer in tassie tho...damn.

I spent 25 years there... Enough to know it can get VERY cold !

I have been to antartica and tasmania
bowral is colder !

but cold in Oz? nah, last time I was at Niagara it was minus 29F !! Ice cubes as big as cars were going over the falls.

Thanks guys, looking forward to the change in climate. When I was last in Tassie it snowed on New Years and we got caught in a tent.

Now that i think about it this thread is confusing me...

It's a state in Aus...what info would you need to know about it?? its not like there's Al Qaeda or anything to watch out for...it's a beautiful place! with so much beauty, anywhere you look!

Practical considerations for me are:

Housing (price and availability varies with location)

Climate (covered)

Saying hi / seeing who's round

Local knowledge (good places to live / stuff to look out for),

I've lived, worked and travelled throughout se Asia on and off for the last five years so pretty used to moving and dealing with much more challenging environments / moves. Guess I'm just in the habit of doing a bit of background research before making the jump.

Well I grew up in Tasmania and all my immediate family are there. Tassie is a great place to be if you like the outdoors. Its a microcosm of the rest of australia, big area of land mostly empty, beautiful in many different ways with rainforests, highlands, sunny beaches, rugged coastline, untouched wilderness and stupid over-mining, tight knit communities and urban sprawl, my favourite though is the odd blend of left wing socialist intelligentsia, right wing red neck bogans and not many inbetween. Its also a haven for artists and you'll find a number of internationally acclaimed artists in various fields dotted all over the place. A celebrated european theatre director live on bruny island, an internationally significant composer lives secluded on blackloaf mountain, an LA session guitarist from the 70's teaches gtr to primary school kids in the hamlet of deloraine etc etc... You've got MONA and you've got Rosebery, dichotomies abound. If there was enough good work for me I'd love to live there but I guess it just doesn't work that way.

Don't forget the leatherwood Honey from Moles Creek, just perfect.
and get out and do some walks. I've down the South-west track and been on Cradle Mountain/ lake St Clair track on boxing day, thigh deep in snow. It's just a magical place... love Tassie, must get back soon.

King Island beef and dairy, berry farms, seafood, pepperberry gin oh its just full of great culinary experiences...

We're planning a couple of trips away this year. Our frequent flyer points are shouting out, "use me"! One plan was to spend a long weekend in Hobart and check out Mona.
A good friend of ours works along side David Walsh and has been telling us to get down there. I think it's time to visit.

Can anyone recommend some accom in Hobart?
So far I've been recommended - The Henry Jones Art Hotel, The Old Woolstore apt hotel and The Lenna of Hobart.
Seeing that we're not paying for airfares we could spend a bit more on accom.
Any recommendations much appreciated.

Dunno about the Old Woolstore - its on a pretty busy road.
Jonesy's art hotel I've heard is good - but my big tip is whatever you book, do it well in advance as MONA brings in around 200,000 visitors a year to Hobart- so Hotel accom is not so easy to get.

Some killer place to eat?....I'm from Sydney so don't ask me - I cook at home and wait until I'm in the big smoke before I eat out.
There is probably some good places to chow down - research research!

We had a meal at the new tapas place at the Mill (I think it's the old Mill? It's a block back from the water, near where the Mona ferry leaves from). Pretty cheap and it was good food.
Everywhere else we ate was expensive and not that great so that's my recommendation!

I know this great place to stay, its run by a funny bearded bloke in lower longley. Bit far out but the scenery is great as is the company...

But seriously look for the smaller BnB options around in Hobart, there are some nice ones in battery point and close in that wont be too expensive but nice if you want more of the local colour rather than bland hotel.

I stayed at Lenna for 5 nights in January for my honeymoon. We got one of their 'Harbour View' rooms on the 4th floor. Great little place and the view from up there was good. Salamanca Place is right next to it with a few decent bars, pubs and restaurants. That said, our first choice was going to be the Art Hotel but we couldn't get it on the nights we wanted.

Not cold down there? I encountered snow! In January! The thermometer temperature might not be cold, but the wind chill will get you.

My list of things to do/not do/advice:
Go to the Lark Distillery and try their Pepperberry Gin (as mentioned previously in the thread) and their Whiskey Liqueur.
Don't go to the Cadbury 'tour' as it's not a tour anymore, you pay money to sit in a room for a 10min talk about chocolate. You can still go to the gift shop for free to buy cheap chocolate however, they just don't tell you that at the door.
At MONA go and do a wine/beer tasting. I don't even like wine and I enjoyed it. Their beers are top stuff.
Go to 'Knopwoods Retreat' bar and try some 'Gillespies Acoholic Ginger Beer' on tap. They're the only place I could find that have it and it's one of the best things I found there.
If you want to go on the Cascade tour, book ahead as it fills up quick.
There are tons of cheese factories and fruit farms you can visit and check out their produce.

You can see what my holiday consisted of.... lots of good food and drink!

hey, I reckon I stayed at the B&B run by the funny bearded bloke last november. He sold little pots of his home made jam .... mmmmmm jam.

It's been years since I've been to Tassie (25 years?). I remember being in the back seat of our car driving past a town called "Merino"?? They had a sign saying - "Population 2". There were 2 houses (either side of the road) and too my surprise an 18 hole golf course with another sign saying "membership 2". We laughed all the way to Hobart.
We did the Franklin River, Craddle Mountain, Port Arthur and pretty much saw every corner of the state. A great holiday from memory and I'm looking forward to returning.
