I've been helping out at one of the NSW regional music conservatoriums of late, they called me today to see if I could come in tomorrow and paint some stage risers for them. I'm guessing a matt black acrylic paint applied in a couple of thin coats rather than one thick coat would do the trick. I have also heard adding 10 percent PVA glue to the paint greatly strengthens and prolongs the paint job? If anyone has any tips, please let me know asap as I have to head in and paint the things tomorrow, so whatever I can get I will have to get from the local hardware chains!

Neil plays awesome Rickenbacker bass for the Swinging Sixties. Recorded them last year - easy job!

Cheers Rick, don't think I can get the Rockhard paint down in time from Cannon Sound though to do the job, they were great though when I lived around the corner from them at Brookvale! (the job I'm doing is at Goulburn).... am curious to try the PVA glue/paint mix to see what happens , let you know how it goes (they will probably end up having to pry the guitarist's sneakers off the riser with a crow bar)...

Painting in black and then finishing with a clear marine varnish is an option, as it is extremely durable. Most marine varnishes are high gloss, but there are some satin versions.

For metals Hammertone gives a great finish - sort of orange-peel texture and really tough. It's used on a lot of heavy industry machinery. One coat is all you need normally.

I have half a tin of rockard somewhere, you could use some of it except I can't bloody find it!

Thanks guys, a couple of coats of an acrylic wattyl decking paint tinted black did the trick this morning, nice thick paint to apply, is washable and will handle the foot traffic. Seemed the best choice due to the lack of available options down here at Goulburn (not even a Bunnings here yet).
