who does good ribbon mic mods?
I need to mod a el cheapo ribbon - dont have the time to do it myself, and would like someone who can re ribbon and install a great transformer.
Also looking for a modded royer copy

I guess your talking in Oz Chris and i've no idea but Michael Joly in the US modded an Apex 205 for me and it's a great cheap mic (new tranny, re-tensioned ribbon etc).

I had a B&O ribbon re-ribboned and rewired by Mark Fouxman in Salt Lake City- it was reasonably easy and cheap to get there (about $30 each way from memory). Very happy with the work, and he is really into ribbon mics- he makes his own from the ground up, including magnets and transformers. The work was pretty reasonably priced.
I would say his transformers are up there and probably better than the standard Lundahl/Carnhill txs that get used.

Basically looking for 1 or 2 cheap royer copies to purchase that I can get modded to have good transformers / re-ribbon if needed.
Australian modder would be best.

Has Glen Phimister crossed your mind at all Chris?
He can re ribbon and should be cool to swap out the tranny.

Thanks Ben - I know Glenn well, and he is one of the people I have in mind.
I sold all my lovely (expensive) ribbons 4038/RCA44/RCA77/Royer's last year.

I'm hoping to find something already worked on first - then if not I can call Glenn.
But I am in a bit of a hurry to record some violin stuff in the next few weeks and was hoping to maybe pick up a modded ribbon or 2 before the session - rather than hire one as I will need it for 2 weeks solid, hence the hire cost would come close to the cost of 1 or 2 cheapish ribbons

There are so many more (el cheapo) ribbons out there these days to choose from.

I am pretty sure Ben sneezby of beesneez can do re-tensioning of the foil and transformer replacements

As I'm sure you know Chris, the tx swap is pretty easy to do on most of the current Chinese ribbons. Re-ribboning is a little bit trickier.
I've got some CAD ribbons I've been mucking around with, and re-ribboned them with much thinner ribbon (supposedly RCA spec thickness) and it did lift the high end a little bit. I also removed one of the layers of mesh inside the headgrill and that made a much bigger difference. That fixed some of the weird resonances happening in the low mids.
I'm interested in putting some Lundahls in there to see what effect it has.

David - your stereo Royer is amazing - Ive been using it on tablas for the last 4 days with Bobby Singh and it sounds so good.

I'm very happy to hear that it went well. Just remember, though, mine is pre-Royer... built by Bob Speiden himself (does anyone know if he's still alive?). Although it has been re-ribboned by Royer.

I sent some cheap ribbons to Stephen Sank for mods, which didn't cost too much, and I love them.. I definitely recommend his work. I don't have his contact details handy atm, but I'm pretty sure I tracked him down via the magic of google originally.
