Anyone know of any spaces in Sydney they've hired, or used for free to record small acoustic music ensembles?

Churches? etc, anything? im contacting the Con of Music, in Sydney now...any other ideas?

There's a converted church on Beecroft Rd in Cheltenham which is being used by some community music group. Its all brick with an apex roof, and I've often thought the acoustics would be awesome.

I'll get the details when I next drive past (I did a google search but couldn't find details).

there is an orthodox church which i went to my cousins baptism at (inner sydney) but that would be difficult to speak to them about (although im pretty sure more priests understand what money means).

Not sure what a bunch of Orthodox priests would feel about 2 hours of carnatic indian performance...

The conservatorium of music has incredible rooms but i havent called them yet...will call tomorow and see what their rates are like...

Sandstone should be pretty sweet.

The Catholic church run by the Samaritan Sisters in Glebe Point is perfect: 1930's art deco building, regularly hired out to the likes of the Song Company. About a 4-5 second reverb in the centre.
I recorded a whole CD there in 2010 . No traffic, out of the flight path.

Rates very reasonable, but garbage service and a cup of tea cost extra.

Damn, the conservatorium of music larger spaces are expensive (just had a chat to the venue manager)....shame... those sound amazing.

Altho, the ensemble rooms are priced OK....

St Stephens Church in Newtown is a pretty common place to do recordings. I've done orchestral stuff there and the room is pretty nice. Not often you get a conductor to say on first listen "yes, that recording sounds exactly like I wanted it to" from a room.

A friends company which builds dinosaur puppets recently hired St Stephens church and she told me it was about $1000 per day. I'd be interested to know what hire price they offer you Jamil.

How about a bomb shelter?

Last time I did Glebe Point, it was about $90 for a 3-hour call

the conservatoriums big concert halls, are F@#$ing expensive, you need to pay a guard $37 per hour ontop of the $2-3K fee for the space, + insurance....

I will contact a few halls this week, none of them called me back after i left messages...

But, i am surprised at this rate it is actually cheaper to hire the floor only of a good studio and just do it there...

I've heard St Stephens is expensive, but I've been hired by the orchestra's directly so have no idea how much it costs as a dry hire. Interested to know too!

There's an outdoor "amphitheatre" at Lake Gillawarna (near Bankstown) - has a stage and a "natural" hill surround - no roof or walls though. You'd need to pick the right time to avoid plane noise and provide your own power, but it is free to use........

damn, that sounds interesting....got to check it out. thats not far from my place!

recording acoustic music there is no worries, i'd be going into a modded OADE bros. recorder...

Padington United Church...$100 an hour, and Graham was a pretty cool bloke on the phone...at this rate tho...using a studio with or without the gear is still cheaper...hoping st stephens is cheaper...couldnt get a hold of em today.

City Recital Hall (Peddle Thorpe)....$180 an hour...PLUS technical staff...

again, i wouldnt have guessed it in a million years, but recording in a fkn studio is cheaper than a "building".

I guess though, the point of wanting to record in a big room is so it sounds like a big room. Many studios don't sound like anything much... Maybe something like a school gym, warehouse/workshop etc could be the go?

yeah can get access to warehouses...will see how useful a recording there would be. i was thinking that this arvo as well.

The entrance is off Henry Lawson Drive - there are 3 entrances and you want the northern one as you head towards Mechano - once in the park if you head towards the top of the hill you can get a view down from the top carpark to the stage. I always wanted to record something there.....

I wonder if my studio, late at night, would do? There is a medium sized auditorium next to the control room. No soundproofing, but it might be alright at night. You could always drop in one evening to see (or hear), at Peakhurst just up the road from where I was when I think you may have visited before. It's a church, but really a converted warehouse.

ahh, i remember your studio...yeah it's pretty quiet round those parts at night for sure.
