Starting during the Howard Govt, The Melba Foundation’s recording arm has received $7.2 million in federal funding and produced 67 classical music albums for international distribution. That is aprox $107, 462 per album!!! This funding has just been discontinued....... why was a portion not redirected to Falls?
What other record company or contemporary music body gets that sort of funding?

The coolest thing i've been to see was a mixed program "curated" by the Sydney Symphonies conductor at the time i think...had performances by Taikoz, the f*kn Gyuto Monks in the flesh , violin solo's composed by Ysaye, ...etc,...

was great....but that doesnt happen every day....

Instead...we get tepid BS given to wankers that want to listen to Mozart all day...ffs.

Yes, we have cool composers like Sculthorpe, and more...but the common classical representation is pretty lame, its pretty sucky that we cant go down any day of the week and watch a live performance of a Penderecki, or something of the like.

You, my friend are going to the wrong gigs. Or maybe they don't exist in sydney but I can go out regularly to see stellar contemporary classical works from both local and overseas composers and performers. Works of the highest quality by exemplary performers. Come to melbourne and I'll take you out to some mind blowing stuff.

Yes there could be more. Yes there is plenty of 'classic' repertoire played tediously but I'm going to lay an even bet that in contrast there is a greater percentage of awful 'contemporary' music to good 'contemporary' music than there is awful 'art' music to good 'art' music being made. Seen "The Voice"?

and yes Melba recordings is a travesty on an epic scale. Not to mention the proprietor...

edit: yes. too much classical contemporary sucks, but you know...the good stuff...we could do with a nice chunk of that in ol' Syd town.

Nah... go for it Jamil! I like a passionate response to a topic like this...... and with other's contributions to the discussion a well rounded picture emerges. Should be more of it on the net. And that crikey article was a good read. What started me off on this was reading about the funding being withdrawn from the Tassy Falls festival and it would not have gone ahead if philanthropist Graeme Wood had not put up some funding. I had just read about the funding being withdraw from melba in a classical music mag and thought this situation could be used as an argument to retain the festival funding.
