Interesting but I wonder whether "at last, it is the microphone that determines the sound – not the preamp or the converter" is necessarily / always a good thing?

when you're recording classical, or any other music striving for realism, i reckon yeah this could be pretty sick.

That's the application but wonder if you'll actually end up with something that's 'better'.
Do you think that bit depth / the dynamic range of converters or the degree of 'distortion' introduced by pre-amps is currently a bottleneck limiting realistic sound?
Maybe I'm just being cranky.

I find it funny that a web site flogging high definition audio gear has horribly grainy low-res images.

Think it's an interesting idea though – am envisioning itb preamp 'models' or similar if the tech became more widely adopted.

in my opinion...the quieter a noise floor, the more you can concentrate on the realism of a performance, and the smaller details of the quiet parts of a performance can come through.
This is less important for artificial and or non natural recording styles, but for classical and such, i reckon it's sicknuts.

Yes... if I could only get those noisy audience members to remove themselves from the concert before I start recording, that would be great

The quiet passages are usually dominated by coughs, chair scrapes, passing traffic etc.

The ability to share the pre amp independently of other users gain settings is what makes this technology great.
