Last one I read was Geoff Emerick's.
Very entertaining and interesting read.
There is a new Ken Scott book just out 'From Abbey Road....'

This is one of the better books about recording and the Beatles I have read. Very well researched and said to be avoiding perpetuating internet myth and historical inaccuracies.

I've been reading Samuel Adler - The Study of Orchestration.

Although it might not seem immediately relevant to recording at first glance, all of its insights into how instruments can blend together are fascinating.

I am halfway through The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross.

Good book thus far! It tracks music's progression through the 20th century. It weaves in period specific political and social movements too. Its got everything. Classical music, noise, pop culture, politics, revolution, riot, war... and a suggested listening list that you can access on itunes.

Recording The Beatles is amazing.
I wouldn't take it traveling, unless I traveled like Jay Z, with a posse to lug my s**t for me.
I also think it's on 'backorder' to put it nicely.
But yeah, superb book.

Yeah the Beatles book looks interesting, although a bit big to be luggin around Asia in a backpack.
The rest is noise sounds interesting. Good to see we have so many edumacted readers here.
We should start a book club.

Some of the 33 1/3 series are pretty cool and small.

The Producer (bio of John Hammond) is cool.

The Recording Angel by Evan Eisenberg (sp?) is good but a bit dense.

If you haven't read any of Peter Garulnick's stuff his book on Soul (and his two vol Elvis bio) are exceptionally well written. Greil Marcus' crit / journalism stuff's pretty good - invisible republic in particular is a good read if a little esoteric.

Hit Men is interesting from an historical (recording) industry perspective and an airport read.

The Tape Op books are fun and broken into toilet reading size chunks but are bulky (though thin). Good for suitcases not backpacks.

Memphis Boys: The Story of American studios and Soulsville USA: The Story of Stax Records looked good (I bought both) but haven't had a chance to read them yet.

Jimmy Webb's Tunesmith is readable and interesting (maybe a bit plodding in parts).

Mixerman's Zen and the Art of Mixing is a stupid light read but a bit of fun and there might be some insight to be had.

Something in there will keep you going.

Not new, but Temples of Sound is quite good.

loving it so far (and in a backpack in tokyo as we speak)

I am yet to read it but have a copy of Sessions with Sinatra, Frank Sinatra and the Recording Art on my reading list.
I always enjoy revisiting Behind the Glass (vol 1 and 2)

The biography of Bob Johnson (producer for Dylan, Cash, Cohen and many other household names) was due out soon. Maybe do a search on that one Andy. I will be grabbing a copy asap.

Not really recording but Keith Richards' book was an interesting read.

I heard the Keith Richards book was excellent.

ive just finished the new keif richards book.. its great.

the mastering by bob katz is interesting.

Q on producing is badly written but a good read (great info and ideas)

and the beatles book, although the "facts" are not as they seem, i dont care though its a great read and has great pictures... who cares about facts, its a great story..

The Art of Recording: Understanding and Crafting the Mix by William Moylan is a great book.

The Encyclopedia of Record Producers

Nearly 463 producers over 869 pages. Covers producers from the late 40's to the late 90's.

Any where from half a page to 4 pages for each producer depending on the depth of their catalogue.

Discography for each producer.

Easy read, especially for those with a short attention span. good cross referencing, great to have next to the record collection.

At 1.5 kilos I wouldn't recommend it for backpacking!

There's too much ground covered to give a quick snapshot, but there's a lot of fascinating info which makes for compelling reading. Science meets cultural origins of music meets human affinity with music.

He frames much of the music referenced content in layman's terms, but it's not watered down by any means.

It's a fun, informative and makes for an interesting read.

For $10.34 and free postage, it'd be rude not to!

Has anyone read "101 Ways Not to f@#$ Up your Chances at Being a Rock Star...a Pocket Guide to Navigating the Treacherous Waters of the Modern Music Industry" by G Love?

i'v been meaning to get it but i can't find it anywhere.

In a similar vein to 'This is your brain on music' is 'Musicophilia' by Oliver Sacks. Well written, fairly challenging on the neurology side, although definitely created for the public, but endlessly fascinating (as are all Sacks' books) and one of my favourite books. Sacks' is a neurologist and he presents cases where his patients have had things go wrong with their brain/music centre (think: orchestra players' ears 'de-tuning', musicial epilepsy, musical hallucinations, sudden musical talents etc) and explains how these have helped advance brain science.
I liked the part where he says musicians have larger brains than everyone else.

Also I've recently really liked 'Imagine: How Creativity Works' by Jonah Lehrer. Again not a recording manual, but a great insight into how creativity happens and what influences it. Really interesting look into work habits for creative people. It's main point is that creative is a state of mind, rather than a 'gift'.

The Rest Is Noise and Perfecting Sound Forever are on my bookshelf waiting in line to be read- glad they've been recommended here Thanks all for the other tips too!

I just started reading Satan is Real by Charlie Louvin (Louvin Bros bio) – it's fantastic.

Stories of the gnarled, old, weird vein of country.

GIllian, I've read the Sacks book, loved it, also another of his books - The man who mistook his wife for a hat - not about music but neurological disorders.

I saw another book called "How music works' that looks interesting at our local bookshop the other day.

Andy- I've got 'The man who mistook his wife...' too- really liked it.
I'll check out the other one- cheers!

Are We Still Rolling ? by Phill Brown.

Life by Keith Richards is a great read and a smallish paperback so easy to carry, I actually bought my copy at an airport.

I am currently reading Revolutions in Sound, Warner Brothers Records, the First 50 Years. It is a real insight into the record 'business' and the battle between the people who want to make music and the people who want to make money.

The old standard "Mixing with your mind" is always a good read, no matter how many times you have already read it.
