Looking to get a pair of small but good quality monitors that will fit in my (rapidly increasing) suitcase.
Something like the genelec 8020a but I thought I'd ask for advice from the brains trust as I have no experience with small monitors. Number 1 factors are portability, reliability followed by sound quality then price. Any ideas?

Myles, we have a pair of Yamaha MSP5's in our dub room, and they are pretty ok. Small but surprisingly heavy.
Have you seen the Genelec 6010A's? They are tiny and put out a lot, although they start rolling off at 100Hz. You can get a sub to go with them, but that kinda defeats the portability thing. There are pretty amazing for such a small size though. We have a pair around the studio somewhere, I was going to say drop by and have a listen but I can't find them..

I have genelecs and a sub. there now in the office connected to me pc.

Are you referring to the active 5 and 1/4 they make?

I've been looking at getting a pair of them. They were playing in my local music store connected to an ipod and I was finding it hard not to be impressed. They really had a lot of wallop for such a small speaker. And they still sounded very good even though they were playing mp3's straight from the pod.

I mix on headphones because my room isn't suitable for full mixing on monitors. The monitors I have are too big for the room. I only use them to reference my headphone mixes.

For the price I can't see why I should not buy them, especially considering 90% of the mixing is done on phones anyway.

The port fires forward on them too don't they? That's attractive because at the moment my studio has no choice but to be hard against a wall.

i was referring to the VXT4, but the rockit 5 (which i think is what you are talking about) is a great box too.
yes both forward ported, and hence suited to small rooms with their backs against the wall...

totally agree "for the price" why not. they are good solid units, and damn cheap!

Thanks for that. I haven't seen the VXT 4. Is it a 4 inch driver? I've never bothered keeping up with monitors too much because of working on cans.

CMS 40 Focals? - heard them for 5 mins at Turra , they warrant further listening for sure.
