Howdy guys
It's time I invested in a new LDC Mic. Primary use will be vocals.
I have project studio and record a variety of styles.
I have a budget of around $1500.
Currently have sm7b and a couple of low budget condensed.

Suggestions?? New or used

Def check out the 'for sale' section here at Trock - I saw Dan was selling a Blue Kiwi for $1500 - that is a killer LDC. There's also a U89 going for $1800 which is quite a bargain (I'm overcommited else I'd be snaffling it)

Update: Oops - looks like the Kiwi is gone.

Andy, there's a very good mic out by Miktek. I just bought one and very happy with it. Miktek CV4. Very good sounding multipattern mic. Full mids, balanced highs, Good lows. Bought it from the Oz distro, Federal Audio... Cris was very helpfull and the deal was too good to pass on. It is in your price range.

There are a couple of options from overseas sellers. Having not purchased mics from overseas before, is there anything i should be aware of? Taxes, postage, insurance,... how to not get rtipped off

Importing goods over $1KAUD may incur an admin charge and GST.... so you may need to factor in those costs....

Postage / freight varies wildly but is generally cheaper (relatively) than Oz postage/freight costs e.g. it cost me $22 postage for an MD441n from Holland vs $60 for me to send a similar size mic to France..... registered and/or sign-for-delivery is worth the extra few $s.

+1 for Miktek, I've heard some great stuff recorded with it and a few of their other models. Their whole range is pretty impressive for the cash. Thinking about a CV4 myself.

They look pretty interesting.

Bees Neez are fantastic mics, and they have worldwide respect. It's a bonus that you're supporting a local business (Ben is up in Byron Bay).

He's just released a new FET mic called the Tribute 3. I've got both the Tribute 1 and the Tribute 2 and they are both beyond glorious IMO. (I've also got an Arabella and 4 Arabella GTs which sadly aren't being made any more).

RRP is $2500 + GST, but he's doing a promo sale at $1400 + GST ($1540). I'm definitely getting one. And just for the record, I don't get any kickbacks or benefits for spruiking their wares. (...although Ben if you're reading this, you have my number ).

ben and veronica are pretty nice theyd probably let you trade if you don't like it anyway.

keen to hear that miktek though. seen an online clip and sounds nice and clear.

Ben seemed to think that of the BN mics within my budget, the T3 will be the best bang for buck, and will meet my needs ...

And yes it is nice to know that I am buying Aussie made from a company where you can deal with the guy thay actually makes the Mic.

Now I have to wait.

Bit late but still on the BN train, the Jade is priced around that range too.. its not such a neutral vocal mic and doesn't suit everything, but it does add a really flattering character to vocals when it works.

I love all the BN mics I have tried, and I suppose the bottom line is you get what you can afford.

I had a Jade, then I sold it and got an Arabella and a James.

There was nothing wrong with the Jade, but I do like both Arabella and James. The James is so creamy.

It's true, Ben and Veronica are top shelf!!! Met them at musikmesse last year and was very impressed by the respect BeesNeez mics were getting from many international brands. Not surprising, they are glorious. I have a F...., which is not on their list...bloody beautiful! Have more ordered. Highly recommended.

It's a bit ironic when the names of reputable mic models (listed or otherwise) are being censored on a forum that caters to music and audio professionals.

Rick, any chance of cranking the FFF (family-friendly filters) back a notch so they don't harm the guests?

Actually it was another "F" word which I did not spell simply because I've never seen that particular model in their catalogue. Ben offered it to me on the phone; it is a beautiful valve mic, and I didn't want to cause a bunch of enquiries to him. Nothing to do with the forum. Email me or Ben.

So i do have a T3 on layby..
But i now see that Ben has a weekend sale on the Arabella GT for $999.

I know that i am getting a deal on the T3. But this new offer has me wondering if the Arabella GT would serve me well and I walk away with $500ish??

The GT has a smaller diaphragm than the T3, which IMO makes it a little less of an "all-rounder". I find it ideal for acoustic guitars and "smaller" voices (less powerful females, children). But based on your stated need for a general purpose vocal mic, I'd tend to hold out for the T3.

Thanks Rick - but of course, we're all much too polite to say anything of the kind!

Ok so its been a long wait, but my new Mic has finally arrived
After further consultation with Ben I have recieved a 'Mahlia'! First impressions are very positive. I am a singer songwriter so I sent Ben some vocal samples and he ended up modifying the mahalia to bring out the mids a touch.

First project with it next week so ill be putting it through its paces.

Any mahalia owners out there have suggestions as to other applications?
