I was looking with interest at the list of gear up for grabs at this auction. Not my time to buy unfortunately and the drive to Sydney is a bit of a stretch. I saw there was a Neve 8ch console, lots of mackie controllers etc etc....
Anyone got any stories re the great deals they got or where prices pushed up fairly high in the bidding?

It's not often that you are wrong Rick, but the suitcase neve's are one of those times.

...well perhaps 50% wrong. One neve needs work. Its missing a channel and doesn't include a PSU.

The other is sitting on my floor running without a single fault. I noticed a thing or two when looking at them on the auction floor. The PSU was tagged and tested 6 months ago. The VU and DC level meter jumped when flicking the PSU to "Internal" and toggling the power switch. I got the impression that it wasn't long out of service... and I was right! The batteries in the unit looked like new. The faders hadn't been cleaned all that long ago - the crappy feel was caused by the plastic dust flaps installed between the faders and faceplate. Everything works on it, much to my surprise.

The foam in the lid of the case made a right mess though. Sure it ain't no 80 series neve... but I happily paid $150 a channel for some IC based sytek preamps... so $200 a channel for 8 fully functioning transformer/IC based channels with useable EQs plus 7 channels worth of spares thrown in as a freebie was particularly worthwhile I thought!

I actually think they would have both sold for over $1000 each if they were auctioned off separately.

If anyone grabbed any of the mackie controllers they want to part with let me know, I'm after one for parts (particularly the faders) to replace some faulty faders on mine. The Pickles site has this sale slated for 27 October!:

Let's run a bet

Fix the faders , find the knobs
Recapp ( yes yes)
Try and panel beat the case find a top
Spit and polish and you have one console you
Can sell for $3500-4000
Not bad for a $750 investment so if you sell the other channels on ebay you will end up in front
if you dont however
and you put a price on the restoration hassle ...
$1500 and one working 8 channel console + resto and a parts console .. things are looking a little untidy

Now if you want to use actually them
And you want balanced direct outs
Well ...

But hey its two neves at auction .. no shipping and one works !

There where quite a few Duntech PCL 15 pairs that I assume went for a cheap price, and some pairs of orphious monitors that would have been a good buy. Any one score any of those. Also there was another Duntech pair that did not have the model on the auction details. Any one see what that was?

I have some knobs and an idea where the lid
Is for that console if your are patient .
You won't find the power supply for the other one
But I am sure you could build one easily
Low volts and all that

Thanks for the info Rick. I picked up a pair of lightly used Duntech Esquire's, and two of the top model Rotel amps I will run in bridge mode, for a grand a few weeks ago, hence the interest.

Yes I did buy a few bits, Eventide obscenity delays for backups, RE ISDN Codecs for $5 each, 20 marantz 660 recorders for the journos to destroy and 10 x 12 fader Klotz DC-1 consoles with audio frames for $20 each. The Klotz stuff has common power supplies,cosmetic bits (knobs, switch caps,faders) and stuff which suffers when the talent spills coke or coffee. All costly. Bonus was a/d & d/a cards and about 20 RTW PPM plasma meters (200 segment) with analogue inputs. Should make a nice hi def meter bridge . The trick is storing 10 full consoles with associated parts and going through and testing bits to have ready for use.
Thought about the Neves..... I have a hi-def scan of the manual if anyone needs one..PM me and give $5 to your favorite charity .I'll send it on CD as it's too big to email.
The audio developments mixer went for about $350. I missed it when someone was gibbering. Very nice little console used for location sound.. film and TV. I replaced a damaged pot in one years ago and they are beautifully constructed...

I am a simple man with a simple plan! Which coincidently didn't really include any ideas of grandeur about selling these little mixers on for a huge profit. Though I have had a startling number of emails and comments about buying some modules. Seems a lot of 54 series owners are chasing mic preamps to replace their stereo line modules. My original comments were probably sparked by the fact that these little desks were in better nick than I initially anticipated.

So far all the knobs are sorted, I hobbled together one complete desk from all the bits I had. (thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it). The bottom of the suit case I have thrown in the bin (if anyone wants it... let me know by thursday, because that is bin day). I have redone a bit of metalwork, built a pine suitcase that needs its edges routed... I am thinking of covering it in tweed... there is just something about neve that makes me think tweed. And now I am sitting sipping on some wild turkey while watching the CNC machine cut out the PCB for the direct out circuit.

I guess it all depends on what you consider a "hassle". In the words of Jim Morrison... I'm gunna get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames... and I gotta say, I am certainly enjoying the process.

some of those desks where mounted with wooden sides ( like the one nymo bought a while back )
and look like neves !

the thing to do really if your going to keep it..and hassle isnt something your scared of
is to get on like you are and give them another 35 years on the planet..

but they do look great set into real wood ..
