Have a look around at the places using 2" AND actually staying in business and making money BUT don't have on-site techs or massive maintenance budgets... a hell of a lot of them have MTR-90s.

reliable, solid, maintainable, easy to set up. sounds great. how old is the one you're looking at? great thing about Otaris is that you can pick up a relatively young one... not sure about the 16 track, but I think they kept making the MTR90 up until the early 2000s?

If a Studer is a Mercedes S-Class, then the MTR90 is a Lexus... not the same brand name mojo, but every bit as good in the real world.

The rubber rollers will turn to glue if not replaced with new aftermarket rollers (http://www.athan.com/cgi-local/store.cg ... &cat2=1022). If the tape transport is not aligned properly (or if the tape becomes sticky) then they have a tendency to throw big tape loops, bending the tension guide swing arms in the process (replacements available from Athan as are bearings etc). A bit flimsy compared to a Studer or Ampex. Sound good though.

give you 8-1 odds its the machine i had .. it came out of 2sm .. was barely if ever used
i doubt outside the rollars it would be much worse today ( 12 years later )
