I have used the the SPL Hardware one, the software one and the UAD one. I thought the hardware one sounded the best over all but out of the two software ones I thought the UAD one sounded better when adding lots of attack it because it sounded smoother then the SPL one. When I gave it to all of them the distortion characteristics sounded the worst on the SPL software one.

I really want the SPL 4 box. I got hooked on it when I saw Tim Carr at 301 using it by adding attack to the snare and kick, reducing the sustain on the kick and then using the other two channels to shape the sound of the room mic's by reducing the attack and adding sustain. The drums sounded amazing.

This is great feedback. I've been thinking a lot about these after getting my hands on one a few months back to have a play. Been thinking of getting the plugin version for awhile now but can't justify a UAD card just yet. But that said the hardware version won't become redundant one day... I hope!

anyone used Elysia Nvelope?
Designed by the same guy as the HW Transient Designer.
Its got EQ involved as well - and seems like the next generation version.

Had the hardware SPL Transient Designer.
I now have the UAD TD.
I think the hardware slightly has the edge, but the UAD is very good, and it's great to just slap it on things without having to route a patchbay etc.
TD is not essential to my productions, but I do use it quite a bit.

In my experience the HW is noticeably better. I couldn't define exactly how much better, but probably around 34%.

I have the hardware TD4 and also the UAD version, and oftentimes use both on a given mix. I agree with others that the HW is superior - though the UAD version is certainly usable, and great for additional instances. Very occasionally I'll print what's coming back from the TD4 rather than pull up the UAD, but for minor tweaks the PI will often suffice.

Ive never been convinced with the sound of the TD - I really like what it does but the quality gets lowered to my ear.
Hence I was interested in the software but, now really considering the Elysia nvelope - discreet class A, does all the TD does - and much more.
