yo dudes,
does anyone know what the Telefunken TD range is like...TD 20, 21, 25, 300, etc or any of the funky wierd looking Telefunkens for that matter...
i know telefunken make kick ass pre's and what not that demand quite a lot of dosh but not sure about these....
are they nice mics? basically better sounding than an SM 57...or are they just lo fi dynamics not worth bothering about...coz there is quite a few on ebay for really good prices....
just wondering if they are worth my money or not....

Without commenting on the dynamic mics in question, Telefunken made a wide range of products ranging from the best vocal preamp (as in the V72) down to consumer tape recorders. A lot of dynamic mics branded Telefunken (usually they were AKGs) were used for the latter, and are probably about as good as a similar Tandy mic today. As in not very.
There are some classic mics from yesteryear, of course, no doubt. Mostly, they also come with a maintenance overhead to get the classic sound. No hits when searching the mic name on google generally means it wasn't a success then and isn't greatly missed now.
Unless you collect german mics of the 1960's as a hobby, I'd be going for the more modern stuff, which tends to be more durable and usable. That said, mics (once you get to a certain level of quality) are a matter of taste and application. If I were offered a job lot of 20 for $100 I might be tempted on the basis that I might find one in there that was just right for recording flugelhorn, but as far as ebay is concerned, I suspect the sellers are relying on the brand to sell a pretty ordinary (not even balanced outs) mic.

thanks chris,
i was under that impression too, since the Seimens/Telefunken pre's were fetching a pretty penny, i thought there was a something a bit suss about telefunken mics for 100 dollars :(
and there i was thinking i was gonna get a bargain, hahaha
