Merry Xmas everybody (say in Dr Nick Voice)

A very merry christmas to all and a very merry christmas was had here in swaziland with an adopted swazi family and a surprisingly Australian BBQ or braai as the tradition is known here. A barbie with a few steaks, marinated chicken, even a slow coal fire roasted lamb, a fridge of beers and a splash in the pool plus the obligatory Swazi thunder storm, power outage, hilarious time passing game playing and, when the power came back on, a movie. Swaziland is a challenging and beautiful but bizarre compilation of the lovely, the familiar, the unusual and the unbelievable amidst the laughter and the stunning scenery.

Seriously, with all the challenges, the trauma, the disappointments and the unusual, I can't stress enough how enlightening this experience has been so far. I can truly say that it was not what I expected, it was not what I wanted but it is deeply meaningful and challenging and I heartily recommend it as a life experience worth exploring to all those who see that the extravagant (by 90% of the worlds population) life we lead in Australia as very different from the reality faced by the rest of the world. My wife and I have been adopted by a Swazi family (whose troubles have not been insignificant) as long lost relatives with a grace and sincerity I'm not sure I have ever experienced in Australia outside my own immediate family. Whilst we Australians have much to be thankful for, to be proud of and to share with, our less successful cousins we also have much to learn from them and generous inclusion is one of them.
