I've been there recently. I record a lot of performing arts school end of year performances. They prerecord vocals because they can't rely on the performance space sound system. The schools & the parents expect their little darlings to sound fantastic, so out comes the auto tune . What amazes me is some of the kids can really sing accurately, but they imitate the auto tune they hear on recordings. One girl sounded like she had a built in vocoder. We've come full circle with art imitating science that is trying to fix art.

A couple of years ago, a colleague of mine who teaches in a degree music program made the same observation of those he was auditioning.
