Pretty reasonably machine if you don't mind the low track count- at the price you'd be mad not to, but it's heavy and big so you'd need to pick it up.

Didn't notice that- saw QLD and kept moving. Looks like tape melted!

Not sure about spares or reliability of these machines, I just have a friend with one and it sounds great. 1" 8 track.

Looks like a melted capstan. Happens when you are careless when cleaning as the melt when contacted by the isotropy alcohol. My Ampex 1100's capstan was repaired by Syd Grondman here in Melbourne. Did a great job at a reasonable cost. Syd was the man responsible for Fhone amps and early AC/DC live sound.

Just heard from the seller- $310 to get a shipping crate made, plus freight costs. Prob $5-600 minimum shipping, so Wez mightn't be that keen!

HA! just saw this.... you guys know me too well.

although i am committed to the MCI asylum now... certainly a potentially great machine at that price, although you always need to expect issues (even for an otari, the toyota of the tape world). I nearly bought one of these a few years ago locally... but it didn't have a remote and the seller wouldn't budge on the price, which was already over the odds (and of course these machines are unusable without the remote).

oh, and when you say 'capstan' you mean pinch roller (the capstan is the bit that drives the tape; the rubber bit that has deteriorated - as they all do eventually - is the pinch roller). certainly replaceable though.

actually i probably would have bought it as a project at that price, if it was local. just as well... i've got nowhere to put it.

an otari is probably as reliable a machine as you'll find, and not bad for parts availability.
